This month
Sotheby’s is set to auction an
exceptionally rare 49 Year Old Single
Malt Whisky from The Dalmore, encased
within a one-of-a-kind glass sculpture
crafted in collaboration with Zaha Hadid
Architects.

The unveiling of
The Dalmore's second instalment in The
Luminary Series, presented by the Highland
Distillery, garnered widespread acclaim
in March this year, drawing attendees
from the realms of whisky, art, design,
and luxury.
This unique collaboration between The
Dalmore and V&A Dundee comprises three
distinctive editions, celebrating the
fusion of whisky mastery and
architectural design. Luminary No.2 sees
Melodie Leung, director at Zaha Hadid
Architects, lending her esteemed talent
and creativity to the project.
Each edition in The Luminary Series
features two distinct whiskies. Firstly,
'The Rare,' a 49 Year Old Highland
Single Malt, housed in a remarkable
glass sculpture crafted by Leung, will
be auctioned by Sotheby’s London. The
sculpture, an awe-inspiring piece of
art, embodies the layers of age and
flavour interactions inherent in the
whisky-making process.
Crafting this masterpiece required
meticulous dedication from artisan
glassmaker Fiaz Elson at The Glass
Foundry, who combined modern techniques
with centuries-old craftsmanship. The
resulting sculpture, weighing 80kg,
boasts a liquid-like texture and glossy
finish achieved through over 500 hours
of hand polishing.
'The Rare' whisky itself is a testament
to collaboration between Leung and The
Dalmore's master makers, Gregg Glass and
Richard Paterson OBE. Aged in American
white oak ex-Bourbon casks, it's
finished in an exclusive assemblage of
rare casks, including Port Colheita Pipe
1963 and 30 Year Old Apostoles Sherry
Cask, further enhanced by a unique
1951/Virgin Oak hybrid cask.
Only three bottles and two sculptures
exist, one set to be auctioned by
Sotheby’s online in London, with
proceeds benefiting V&A Dundee. The
remaining set will be displayed at The
Dalmore distillery, and the third bottle
will be released as part of a series
compendium in the future.
Alongside 'The Rare,' the Luminary
Series offers 'The Collectible,' a 16
Year Old Single Malt available in
limited quantities worldwide. Drawing
inspiration from its rare counterpart,
'The Collectible' is swiftly becoming a
sought-after addition for whisky
enthusiasts worldwide, retailing at
£275.
The Dalmore Luminary 'The Rare' 49 Year
Old Highland Single Malt, housed in a
dramatic glass sculpture by Melodie
Leung of Zaha Hadid Architects, will be
