The Dalmore 51 Year Old 1966

If you are looking for a last minute Valentine's whisky gift idea for that special someone in your life then how about this rare single malt whisky which The Dalmore unveiled yesterday, but bare in mind you will need deep pockets to express your love with this one. It is The Dalmore Aged 51 Years, which is a very limited edition release of only 51 bottles worldwide and as you can imagine it has a eye watering price tag of £55,000, but can you really put a price on love.

The Dalmore has become known for these high end limited releases over the years and this Dalmore 51 Year Old is the 180 year old Highland distilleries first release of the new decade. The creative handiwork of The Dalmore's long serving Master Distiller Richard Paterson the Dalmore 51 began its maturation journey in ex-bourbon casks and was then distributed between prestigious Port Colheita 1938 casks, exclusive Matusalem sherry casks and first fill bourbon casks. The spirit was finally reunited in specially selected bourbon barrels for a final flourish.

As you would expect for such a premium release, the rare 51 year old is presented in premium packaging, it comes in a striking decanter which is adorned with the iconic 12-point ‘Royal’ stag in Sterling silver and crowned with a crystal stopper, each bottle pays homage to The Dalmore’s Royal heritage. Every decanter is held in a hand-crafted high gloss coffret case crafted from black sycamore wood which is said to echo the sophistication of the liquid within.

Richard Paterson tasting The Dalmore 51 Year Old 1966

Richard Paterson, Master Distiller at The Dalmore, commented: "The Dalmore 51 Year Old is a noble single malt of rare profundity and it has been my pleasure to closely follow its maturation over five decades. I am always looking towards the future and I carefully consider how each distillation will evolve, moving our spirits to new wood to transform their conclusion. The Dalmore 51 Year Old is a fine example of this."

I have been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of a few stunning older Dalmore expressions such as this over the years, if your pockets are deep enough I hope this is right up there with them in quality, I haven't tasted this one so I cannot comment on it but the official tasting note is below for you to consider.

The Dalmore 51 Year Old 1966 vintage was bottled at 40% ABV and will be available to purchase from this month from specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt and it will also be available in selected travel retail outlets across the globe.

The Dalmore 51 Year Old 1966 Review

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Rich mahogany gold with intense copper highlights.

Nose: Age has crafted this noble spirit to the height of unashamed luxury as it immediately reveals rare nuances of liquorice stick, Napoleon cake laced with Black Morello cherries, Old English marmalade and faint whispers of Modena Balsamic and Oloroso sherry. These enticing aromas are bolstered by brooding roasted Java coffee, moist fruit cake covered in icing sugar, Brioche dipped in Manuka honey and pecan pie. There is a finale of creamy caramel, black molasses and Doyenne pears soaked in aged tawny port which completes this sensory journey of true opulence.

Taste: This indeed is a treasure chest of pure liquid gold as this iconic time piece is flawless as a brilliant cut diamond when it radiates such beauty of juicy El Dorado plums, succulent sun kissed raisins, ginger cake sprinkled with Demerara sugar and Madagascan vanilla pod. Beautifully pure and expressive as the hand of time has moulded and crafted this iconic spirit to perfection. It therefore must be given all the reverence and respect it richly deserves. It has taken years to create this masterpiece yet in a matter of seconds you will instantly recognise its outstanding credentials. A final rhapsody of treacle sponge covered in hot chocolate, freshly baked wholemeal toast, pineapple and sweet sultanas harmoniously drift away on the aftertaste.
