Cutty Sark Centenary Edition

29th September 2023
Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky celebrates 100 years of adventure unveiling a rare 23 Year Old centenary edition crafted to mark the occasion aboard its namesake ship.

Cutty Sark Centenary Edition

This week, Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky celebrated its centennial anniversary in a truly adventurous fashion, embarking on a spirited voyage aboard the legendary Cutty Sark ship, which bears its namesake. This momentous occasion served as the perfect backdrop for the brand's launch of the commemorative Cutty Sark Centenary Edition—described as a whirlwind of flavour that will leave an indelible mark.

The unveiling of Cutty Sark's bold and intricate Centenary Edition was an unforgettable journey of exploration, bringing together customers, influencers, and industry experts from across the globe. The festivities harkened back to the brand's origins, with events held at Berry Bros & Rudd, where the brand first came to life in 1923, and on the iconic Cutty Sark Ship in Greenwich, London—the very ship that inspired the brand's name and label.

Crafted to commemorate a century of excellence, the Cutty Sark Centenary Edition is a masterful blend of Scotch whiskies aged for 23 years and is available in a limited run of just 1,435 numbered bottles. This extraordinary fusion of flavours is said to reach profound depths, highlighted by the inclusion of single malt aged in Oloroso sherry casks and further enriched by a finishing period in port wine casks, infusing it with a luscious sweetness. Meticulously selected malt and grain whiskies from Scotland's most iconic distilleries were expertly combined with this single malt. The blend was left to mature for 100 days in casks once brimming with port, a beloved libation among sailors. Bottled at cask strength and free from chill filtration, the whisky culminates in a captivating tempest of swirling caramel and chocolate, yielding to subtle notes of gentle fruits and spices.

The visually stunning gift packaging pays a graceful tribute to Cutty Sark's enduring muse—the legendary tea clipper, Cutty Sark, renowned for its remarkable speed. The casing resembles the majestic mainsail, fastened with an exquisitely looped white rope secured in a gleaming golden eyelet. Opening it reveals an exquisite, original bottle gracefully displayed on a golden pedestal. Crowning the bottle is a golden stopper fashioned in the likeness of a ship's cleat, adorned with intricate rope detailing elegantly wound around the neck.

The edition’s launch was the culmination of Cutty Sark's anniversary celebrations. These include:

  • An Anniversary limited-edition design of Cutty Sark's original whisky. Available globally, it showcases a vibrant label and giftbox in the brand’s signature yellow.

  • A dramatic video campaign entitled Never-Ending Adventure, reflecting Cutty Sark's boundary-breaking spirit, from the brand’s pioneering roots, to being smuggled into the US during Prohibition and more.

  • A striking communication campaign which anchors Cutty Sark in its maritime world and honours its adventurous style.

Cutty Sark Centenary Edition Review

Bottled at 52.2% ABV, non chill filtered.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Gentle aromas of lemon frosting ebb and flow with raisins and demerara sugar. Ripples of subtle spice and caramel are cut through by hazelnuts and a splash of oak and spice.

Taste: A mouth-coating storm of spice and sweetness. Gingerbread surges with polished oak, alongside waves of dark fruits, caramel and chocolate. Ever-present are sherried undercurrents of nuts, polished leather and tobacco.

Finish: Long and lingering, as autumn leaves, tannins and candied orange drift into soft spice and berries.
