Chivas
Brothers unveil plans for a Islay
distillery located on the picturesque
grounds of Gartbreck Farm, west of
Bowmore.

Chivas Brothers, the Pernod Ricard
subsidiary dedicated to Scotch whisky,
has revealed its plans for the inaugural
distillery on the Isle of Islay.
This upcoming distillery represents a
significant milestone as Chivas Brothers
is set to introduce its first Islay
whisky into its Scotch portfolio. This
addition will complement its globally
recognised collection of malts and
blends, which includes renowned names
such as The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Royal
Salute, Chivas Regal, and Ballantine's.
As a leader in sustainable Scotch
production, Chivas Brothers has set an
ambitious goal to achieve carbon
neutrality in distillation across all
its facilities by the end of 2026. In
pursuit of this target, the Islay
project's design, along with any
potential future distillery
constructions, will prioritise
carbon-neutral distillation from the
outset.
Located on the picturesque grounds of
Gartbreck Farm, west of Bowmore at
Saltpan Point along the Loch Indaal
shoreline, this distillery will offer
breathtaking vistas overlooking
Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte on the
opposite shore. Once it becomes
operational, this distillery will focus
on producing Islay single malt whisky,
celebrating the distinctive smoky and
peated characteristics for which the
region is renowned.
The acquisition of this land underscores
Chivas Brothers' commitment to becoming
an integral part of the Islay community,
just as it has been for decades in
Speyside and the surrounding regions.
Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chairman and CEO
at Chivas Brothers commented: "This is
an important new chapter in the Chivas
Brothers story. The introduction of an
Islay whisky completes our comprehensive
and award-winning Scotch portfolio. As a
business built on hundreds of years of
heritage, it also gives us the
opportunity to do something we rarely
do, which is to start from scratch.
"Here on Islay, we can create a
blueprint for carbon neutral distilling
and continue to usher in this era of
sustainable Scotch. We are committed to
Scotch, to the Islay community and the
landscape that makes it the perfect
place to continue our vision to shape
the future of whisky."
Full plans for the site will be revealed
in due course.
