Caol Ila 24 Year Old 175th Anniversary Edition

22nd February 2022
Diageo release a limited edition Caol Ila 24 Year Old whisky to mark 175 years of the Islay distillery.

Caol Ila 24 Year Old 175th Anniversary EditionDiageo has released a special limited-edition expression of Caol Ila to mark 175 years of the Islay distillery. The limited release Caol Ila 24 Year Old 175th Anniversary Edition is a limited release of just 3,000 bottles worldwide.

Diageo doesn't reveal the type of casks the Caol Ila 24 Year Old 175th Anniversary expression was matured in but going by the official tasting note which I have posted below it looks very much like a bourbon barrel matured dram which has been bottled at what should be a very flavoursome strength of 52.1% ABV.

Nestled on the eastern edge of Islay since 1846 lies Caol Ila, it is often an unsung hero of the peaty whisky making island, the distillery's name "Caol Ila" is Gaelic for "The Sound of Islay" – which is the narrow stretch of sea that separates Islay from the neighbouring island of Jura.

Don't be rushing off to the distillery to get hold of a bottle though as the Caol lla distillery is currently closed due to construction work. Next year the distillery will be the fourth and final Diageo owned Scotch whisky distillery to re-open following a £185m (US$260.6m) refurbishment investment across the Johnnie Walker 'four corners of Scotland' concept. The four distilleries represent the regional variations of Lowland (Glenkinchie), Speyside (Cardhu) and Highland (Clynelish) as well as Islay.

"It's fantastic to celebrate over 175 years of Caol Ila with a brilliant bottle," said distillery manager Sam Hale. "I'm sure it will be a hit with our fans, who we look forward to welcoming when we open the doors to our re-imagined visitor experience."

Caol Ila 24 Year Old 175th Anniversary Edition has a RRP of £295 and will be available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, House of Malt, Tyndrum Whisky and Master of Malt

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Clean and fresh with a whisper of camp-fire smoke and a subtle hint of rich, buttery pastry.

Taste: A soft honeyed sweetness balanced with a prickle of sea salt and light smoke.

Finish: A long and warming finish with a light charred smokiness and a delicate kick of spice.
