Borders Distillery Workshop Series
inaugural release WS:01 Malt & Rye
Blend.
 Here
is a new Scotch whisky, in more ways
than one,
the Borders Distillery Workshop Series
WS:01 Malt & Rye Blend which is the first Blended Scotch Whisky to leave
the Scottish Borders since 1837, and the
inaugural release in the Workshop Series
from the Borders Distillery.
To create this Malt & Rye Blend the
folks at Borders Distillery distilled a
small batch of rye spirit back in 2019
and matured it in the same fresh-fill
bourbon casks as the malt.
It is the first blend of Scotch Whisky
entirely distilled in Hawick in the
borders of Scotland, it is a blend of
63.8% Single Grain (Rye) whisky and
36.2% Single Malt whisky and it has been
bottled at 40% ABV without filtration.
Commenting on the launch, John Fordyce,
said: "In 2019, we distilled a grain
spirit made from rye spirit and matured
it in the same fresh-fill bourbon casks
as the malt to create this remarkable
and aromatic whisky. The spiciness of
the rye combined with the Borders malt,
which is rich with fruit and vanilla,
makes this a very approachable blend
with character and depth.
"The Workshop Series is about respecting
the rules but challenging the status
quo. A rye-based blend is exactly that –
it’s innovative, it’s inventive and it
gives a taste of what is to come as part
of the Workshop Series."
Each WS01:Borders Malt & Rye bottle is
individually numbered, and only 6,000
will ever be released for sale in the
UK, a further 3,000 globally with a
price tag of £40 it is available to buy
online from the Borders Distillery shop.

Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A very gentle mix of creamy vanilla,
lemon with a little candied edge and
some lovely mild sweet oak spice.
Taste:
Just as the nose announced was coming
and just as gentle, creamy vanilla, a
little butter toffee, biscuity grains,
some lemon zest and a lovely sweet oak
spice.
Finish:
The vanilla, biscuity grains and toffee
bow out quickly while the spices are
more vibrant now, they peak then slowly
fade leaving some lingering oak.
Comment: A very gentle young
whisky where the gentle spices are the
star of the show and the vanilla and
grains are the supporting act. Shows
great potential of what is to come from
the Borders Distillery, a creative blend
and great use of casks to produce
something this interesting at this young
age and £40 isn't a bad price to try
something new from a new distillery
these days.
