The Borders
Distillery unveils cutting-edge
technology ahead of single malt debut.

With a major digital overhaul now
complete, The Borders Distillery has
taken a significant step toward the
release of its first single malt Scotch
whisky. The Hawick-based distillery has
rolled out Bottle ERP (Enterprise
Resource Planning), a cloud-based
platform that provides full visibility
of the whisky-making process from start
to finish.
Working alongside leading consultancy
Catalyst ERP, the distillery has
implemented Bottle ERP—a comprehensive
spirits management system built on
NetSuite’s globally recognised cloud
platform. The technology streamlines
business operations, strengthens quality
assurance, enhances cask and warehouse
management, and allows the team to trace
every stage of production with greater
accuracy. The system also incorporates
WMS Go, an integrated warehouse
management solution.
This milestone places The Borders
Distillery at the forefront of digital
transformation within the spirits
sector. Founded in 2018 as the first new
distillery in the Scottish Borders since
1837, the company is preparing to unveil
its inaugural single malt—a launch that
will be strongly supported by the
seamless introduction of Bottle ERP. The
new system ensures the distillery can
confidently demonstrate provenance and
meet the expectations of modern whisky
consumers.
The deployment of Bottle ERP forms part
of a wider investment strategy as the
distillery works toward becoming a
recognised name in Scotch whisky. It
represents a significant move toward
blending long-standing traditions with
forward-thinking innovation.
David Shuttleworth, distiller at The
Borders Distillery, commented:
"Implementing Catalyst’s Bottle ERP is
just the beginning; we’ve now laid down
a foundation from which we will begin to
build our virtual distillery on. Working
in partnership with Catalyst, we’re
building a system that has long been
sought after within the whisky industry
- covering the whole process from end to
end. I strongly believe the system will
be transformative for The Borders
Distillery and shows what collective
thinking and collaborative working can
achieve - particularly in an industry
which craves technological advances."
Nathan Cahoon, Chief Operating Officer
of The Borders Distillery, added:
"Through our work with Catalyst we have
delivered a full digital transformation
within the distillery - allowing our
team to follow the production journey
from ingredients through to cask
selection, maturation and, eventually,
bottling. Being able to track and
demonstrate the provenance of our whisky
is more important now than ever before,
and Bottle ERP allows us to do this
seamlessly. At The Borders Distillery we
bring together industry traditions with
a forward-thinking approach, allowing us
to address consumer demands on a global
scale."
As the platform becomes central to daily
operations, it reinforces the
distillery’s commitment to transparency,
quality, and innovation. The launch of
The Borders Distillery’s first single
malt is now imminent and will be
underpinned by this robust digital
infrastructure.
Sam A’Bear, Catalyst Bottle ERP – Sales
Manager, Distillery Specialist said:
"The implementation of Bottle ERP is
transforming how distilleries operate
and is driving digital innovation across
the whisky industry. By connecting every
stage of production, from grain sourcing
through to bottling and beyond, Bottle
ERP brings together all aspects of a
distillery’s operations within one
unified system. The platform empowers
producers with unprecedented visibility,
traceability and control over their
processes. The Borders Distillery is
leading by example, demonstrating how
technology can enhance tradition. Their
adoption of Bottle ERP shows that data
and craftsmanship can work hand in hand
to produce world-class whisky with
complete provenance."
As the first distillery to operate in
the region for nearly 200 years, The
Borders Distillery aims to showcase the
quality and creativity of a long-quiet
whisky region. Over the past seven
years, the team has trained a new
generation of distillers and matured a
fruit-forward spirit crafted exclusively
from barley grown within 35 miles of
Hawick, sourced through the Borders
Growers & Distillers programme in
partnership with Simpsons Malt.
Blending tradition with modern
innovation, The Borders Distillery’s
digital transformation marks a defining
moment as it prepares to introduce its
first single malt Scotch to the world.
