Blair Athol distillery was founded in 1798, but it closed again soon after. It remained closed until 1825, when it was reopened by John Robertson. A long line of different owners then followed throughout the years. The distillery was finally closed in 1932 before being purchased by Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd, in 1933. Arthur Bell didn't actually produce any whisky at the distillery until 1949 at which time it had been totally rebuilt. It then run until 1970 when the production capacity was doubled. Arthur Bell & Sons became part of Guinness in 1989. The latter is currently part of the United Distillers and Vintners, now Diageo. Only 5% of the Blair Athol production is sold as single malt, the majority of malt produced at Blair Athol is sold to blenders. Blair Athol is a main contributor to the Bell's whisky blend.
