Bladnoch,
Scotland’s southernmost distillery has
completed the Master Distiller's
Waterfall Series with the release of the
fifth and final edition into its
portfolio of Lowland single malt Scotch
whiskies.
Bladnoch, the
southernmost distillery in Scotland, has
introduced the fifth and concluding
edition of the Master Distiller’s
Waterfall Series to its range of Lowland
single malt Scotch whiskies, Bladnoch
Waterfall 05 2024 Edition which will be
unveiled at the distillery’s annual
Waterfall Day festival event on May 18,
2024.
Guided by Bladnoch's Master
Distiller, Dr. Nick Savage, this
innovative five-year series delves into
the realm of whisky maturation,
showcasing the extraordinary journey of
Bladnoch's distinctive Galloway spirit
as it evolves to develop its unique
flavours and character.
Launched annually since 2020, each
expression is said to exemplify the
distillery’s flavour-centric approach to
whisky crafting, illustrating the
diverse paths through which the same
aged Bladnoch single malt can be further
refined to create distinct taste
profiles, akin to a cascading waterfall
of flavours.
At the inception of this exceptional
whisky-making journey for The Waterfall
Series, Nick meticulously selected ample
aged Bladnoch single malt from a blend
of sweet ex-bourbon casks and intense
Oloroso sherry casks maturing in the
distillery’s 207 year old bluestone
warehouses to compose the five year
series.
Waterfall 01 2020 Edition presented
the whisky in its nascent maturation
stage, revealing hints of lemon cake and
dried apricot, with a refreshing
sweetness on the palate. Moving into the
second year, the remaining whisky was
transferred into Oloroso sherry
puncheons, yielding new notes of
treacle, dried apricots, and dark
chocolate for Waterfall 02 2021 Edition.
In the third year, an exquisite port
pipe maturation unveiled notes of dates,
nutmeg, and root ginger, with a texture
of dried apricots for Waterfall 03 2022
Edition. Continuing the journey into
year four, Waterfall 04 2023 Edition saw
the whisky further matured in Hungarian
Tokaji dessert wine casks, adding notes
of grapes and jam upside-down cake to
the mix.
For this fifth and final single malt,
Waterfall 05 2024 Edition has been
meticulously finished in second-fill
Oloroso sherry puncheons, harmonising
all the flavours developed over time.
The result is said to be a whisky
characterised by a sugary flavour
profile enriched with dates and nutmeg.
It presents aromas of Christmas dates
with sugary dark treacle on the nose,
followed by sticky toffee pudding with
rounded, floral nutmeg flavours on the
palate, culminating in a sweet
mouth-coating sensation leading to a
subtle warmth in the finish.
Dr Nick Savage, Master Distiller at
Bladnoch Distillery, said: "This is a
milestone occasion for the distillery as
we proudly complete The Waterfall
Series.
"Crafting this series of exceptional
whiskies has been a wonderful journey.
At the beginning of the process in 2020,
I selected single malt from a
combination of sweet ex-bourbon casks
and intense Oloroso sherry casks, to
form the basis for the full set of five
editions.
"The first release really showcased the
whisky at the beginning of its
maturation journey and at the end of
each year, after bottling each batch, I
assessed how the whisky matured to make
my selection for the next cask type for
a new layer of finishing where flavour
and character would develop further for
the next edition. This created a
waterfall effect which inspired the
collection’s name, and it’s a privilege
to complete the series."
Waterfall 05 2024 Edition is a limited
release of just 1,000 individually
numbered bottles, set to debut on May
18, 2024, during Bladnoch’s Waterfall
Day festival—an annual celebration at
the distillery that draws whisky
enthusiasts from across the globe to
revel in their shared passion.
From 12pm to 7pm, attendees can enjoy
live music performances featuring
musicians Katie Mac and Ometeotl,
indulge in culinary delights from
Caroline’s Catering and The Tin Van
Eating Co, and partake in exclusive
tastings of Bladnoch single malt
whiskies, including The Dragon Series,
guided by Bladnoch’s UK and Australia
brand ambassadors.
Waterfall 05 2024 Edition is non-chill
filtered and presented in its natural
color. Priced at an RRSP of £140, this
exclusive release will be available
solely at Bladnoch Distillery starting
May 18, 2024.
