Black Tartan
88, a 31 Year Old
limited edition blend of iconic whiskies
produced at The Macallan, Highland Park
and The Glenrothes distilleries scores
94/100 in Jim Murrays latest Whisky
Bible 2021 and it is still available.
Edinburgh based Skene Whisky who is a
relatively new independent bottler who
emerged a few years ago but have been
relatively quiet regards new releases in
recent times has
just released their first bottling for
2020, 'Black Tartan 88', a premium
Scotch blended malt whisky comprising of
just three component whiskies, The
Macallan, Highland Park & The
Glenrothes.
The three component whiskies which were
distilled in 1988, were blended at birth and
laid down to mature in a single hogshead
cask for 31 years. The result of this
marriage of Highland malt whiskies after
31 years of the angels taking their
share is
337 X 70cl bottles of 'Black Tartan 88'
which has been bottled at 48% ABV and is
naturally coloured and non
chill-filtered and the RRP for a bottle
is £248.
Described by Skene whisky as being very
smooth, they say on the nose it has
"sweet vanilla and tropical fruit, on
the palate spiced butterscotch with
balanced oak and the finish is again
vanilla, warming, long and to the rear
of the palate".
There is no doubt that given the
pedigree of Black Tartan 88 with two of
the three component whiskies in the
Highland blended malt having been
produced at the iconic distilleries
of The Macallan and Highland Park there
will be a lot of interest in the whisky
and no doubt fuelling that interest will
be the fact that Jim Murray has scored
the Black Tartan 88 in his latest
edition of his
Whisky Bible 2021
at 94/100 which is a big score and a big
thumbs up from Jim who commented "This
is an old dram which retains a
marvellous zest for life but piles on
the malt in spades".
I am told that Skene Whisky plans to
release a number of new ranges later
this year. "Skene Reserve" will be
single cask premium bottlings of vintage
malt whisky (eg Macallan 30 Year Old). "Skene
Sherry Editions" will be sherry-matured
single malts (48% ABV) aimed squarely at
whisky drinkers. "Skene American Oak
Editions" will be ex-bourbon single malt
bottlings, again bottle at 48% ABV. "Skene
Peated Malt Editions" will be as peated
single malt expressions, again bottled
at 48% ABV.
The new Black Tartan 88 expression is
now available from Skene Whisky’s online
shop at https://www.skenewhisky.com/product/black-tartan-1988-single-cask/
You will also find Skene's everyday
Black Tartan blend available from specialist online whisky
