Benriach The
Sixteen makes a return to the Speyside
distillery's core range, created from a
renewed recipe of the iconic expression,
it is a three cask
matured spirit, matured in a combination
of bourbon, sherry and virgin oak.
 Those
of you who are lucky enough to recall
the Benriach 16 Year Old expression
which has appeared at slightly different
bottling strengths and styles over the
years will be intrigued to hear that the
distillery has just announced the return
of the 'Benriach The Sixteen' to its
permanent core range line-up.
I am lucky enough to recall the Benriach
16 Year Old expression which launched
back in 2004 which had a delicious touch
of peat smoke amongst the equally
delicious honey and vanilla notes, this
peat was lost in later incarnations of
the Benriach 16 Year Old, which in later
times became known as Benriach The
Sixteen and going by the official
tasting notes for the new relaunched
Benriach The Sixteen it is more closely
related to the 16 year old expression we
last seen in 2016, but not quite
identical which should be a good thing.
The new Benriach The Sixteen is a three
cask matured spirit, matured in a
combination of bourbon, sherry and
virgin oak, it has been created from a
renewed recipe of the iconic expression
which we have seen in the past and the
return of the expression bridges the
strangely large gap which has sat between
the Benriach 12 Year Old and outstanding
Benriach 21 Year Old malts.
Known for its long-standing tradition of
distilling classic, peated and triple
distilled whisky and a vast eclectic
cask inventory sourced from around the
world, the full Benriach portfolio has
been artistically crafted by Master
Blender Rachel Barrie and her team, I do
wonder (and hope) if we will see the
return of the Benriach The Sixteen
followed by a Benriach The Smoky Sixteen
in the future.
Commenting on the new Benriach The
Sixteen Master Blender for Benriach,
Rachel Barrie, said: "The return of
Benriach The Sixteen is a very special
moment for the distillery as it is one
of our most treasured expressions.
"Our signature Speyside style blossoms
at ten years old, finding depth and
richer layers of orchard fruit character
as it turns sixteen. Our core flavour
components of fruit, malt and oak become
more concentrated, enriched with age at
sixteen years old, bringing layers of
stone fruit, smooth creamy malt, wild
honey and nutty oak spice.”

Nose:
Baked apple and creamy hazelnut malt
with overtones of ginger-spiced apricot
and honey.
Taste: Spiced
stewed apple, stone fruit and mellow
nutty oak, with honeyed malt and candied
peel.
