The Balvenie
releases 6th batch in the Tun 1401
Series.
The
Balvenie has introduced another whisky
in to the Tun 1401 range, The Balvenie
Tun 1401 Batch 6, available exclusively
in the United States from the beginning
of October 2012. Crafted by the
industry's longest-serving Malt Master,
David Stewart, the limited-edition
Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 is the second
batch to be released exclusively in the
United States.
Inspired by and produced in one of the
oldest warehouses at The Balvenie
Distillery, Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6
features liquid that has matured in nine
different casks. The special vatting is
a combination of seven traditional
whisky casks and two sherry butts,
finished in the legendary Tun 1401 – a
traditional oak marrying vessel, in
which the finest aged casks from the
distillery warehouses are combined. The
ages of the rare casks span a number of
decades and have been hand-selected by
David Stewart and cared for by the
distillery's onsite team of coopers.
'The Balvenie is privileged to have some
the rarest whisky maturing at our
distillery," said David Stewart,
Balvenie Malt Master. "The Balvenie is
unique among whiskies in that it
maintains complete control of all the
rare crafts that go into creating our
special single malt Scotch whisky. Five
rare crafts and a long wait have gone
into making the complex Tun 1401 Batch
6, and it is important that this single
malt meets the expectations of what has
become a sought after release for The
Balvenie drinker and whisky enthusiasts
in the United States."
The sixth batch in the Tun 1401 series
is an unrepeatable marriage of single
malt that is fragrant and fruity with
barley sugar sweetness and soft vanilla.
The liquid is sweet at the start,
followed by a luscious explosion of
tangy citrus and gentle spices. Notes of
honey combined with rich vanilla syrup
and hints of oak tannin give a rich
finish with a lingering sweetness.
The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 has an ABV
of 49.8% and a recommended retail price
of US $250.00.

Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 1
The first batch was made for distillery
visitors only, and was created from 6
casks – a 1973 Sherry Butt, a 1972
Sherry Hogshead and American casks from
1966, 1974, 1978 and 1988.
Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 2
Released only in the UK, Europe, Asia, and
South Africa and is made up of 10 casks,
mostly from the 1970s with one from the
1960s and one from the 1980s.
Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 3
Similar to batch 2, but was made for US
distribution only. Due for release Fall
2011.

Made for travel retail. Mr Stewart
normally allows three months for the
marrying period, but batch four was married for a
total of four months.

Batch 5 released worldwide, made up of 9 casks, five traditional
American oak casks from 1966, 1972,
1973, 1974 and 1991 and four sherry
butts distilled in 1970, 1971, 1972 and
1975. All married in the impressive Tun
1401.
How do the batches differ?
When asked how he expects the batches to
differ, Balvenie Malt Master David Stewart
said, "…the batches do have some
similarity but if one were to line the
batches up for sampling, which I
haven’t done yet, we might be surprised
by the differences that there are. I
think that each has this citrus orangey
flavour which seems consistent…"
