 Tradition has it that, in 1475, under a sentence of death, John the last Lord of the Isles fled to the hills. The Earls of Atholl and Crawford rapidly set off in pursuit.
Upon discovering where the fugitive was drawing water, the Earl of Atholl ordered that the well be filled with a glorious mixture of whisky, honey, herbs and oatmeal.
Overcome by this Highland hospitality, or perhaps believing that this was just another example of God's mysterious ways. John drank deeply, only to fall asleep, and thus fall into the hands of the brave men of Atholl. Alas Atholl Brose was created.
