Review of
Alberta Distillers Reifel Rye by
Canadian based Scotch Malt Whisky Forum

 Alberta
Distillers who garnered the world whisky
of the year award a few years ago (2020)
with Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye
has just released a new high rye,
Alberta Distillers Reifel Rye bottled at 42%
ABV.
Alberta Distillers Reifel Rye whisky is aged in charred
white oak and ex-bourbon barrels.
Founded in 1946 by oilman Frank M.
McMahon and B.C. distiller George H. Reifel, Alberta Distillers is the first
and oldest distiller in this western
province. The name of this new whisky is
homage to Reifel who was also a master
distiller and had worked at his craft in
Japan as well. Canada is a thriving
whisky production country once again and
the quality of its spirits is
undeniable.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Turkish delight, crème brulee, syrupy
baked McIntosh apple, soft cherry cream,
enticing almost candied rye spice,
watermelon sorbet, poached pears and
gently spiced toffee and dark caramel
candy squares. Late chicken cracklings.
Taste:
Medium-bodied, a melange of spice, dark
toffee, chocolate pudding and tangy
watermelon on the arrival with
perseverating high cocoa content dark
chocolate and a peppery note on the
development.
Finish:
Lingering, mouth-watering, peach skin,
warming ginger and spice, dark chocolate
and Dutch black soft licorice.
Comment:
This Canadian high rye whisky has a
quality layered nose and a palate with
some serious finesse. It is both easy
drinking and quite delightful. The 42%
abv. appears to work well in this
creation. The Canadian price tag of
$49.50 is also most appealing.
Currently, it is only offered in Canada
but hopefully it will export to USA and
elsewhere.
