Johnnie Walker XR 21 Year Old Review

22nd December 2014
Johnnie Walker XR 21 Year Old, a review by Murray Cohen.

The Johnnie Walker XR 21 year old is an exclusive blend which was inspired by the handwritten notes of Sir Alexander Walker, the grandson of founder Johnnie Walker. The blend was created in honour of Sir Alexander Walker's knighthood in 1920 which he received for his noble conduct whilst fulfilling his duty to King and country.

The Johnnie Walker XR 21 year old blend contains whiskies sourced from the private 'reserves' of the Johnnie Walker Master Blender, including some very rare and highly sought after single malt whisky from the Brora distillery which closed back in March 1983.

Murray Cohen commented: "The  Johnnie Walker XR 21 year old  flaunts a maturity and balance that is both alluring and appealing from nose to finish. One can detect some really aged single malts in this expression. The nose is quite dramatic in its intensity, the palate a true indication of its maturity and the finish, a testament to its consistency and impact." You can read Murray's review below.

The Johnnie Walker XR 21 year old is now available from The Whisky Exchange

Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Orange Amber.

Body: Full.

Nose: Sweet peach fuzz at once followed by orange zest emulsified in mild spice. A cross between pungent summer flowers and ripened papaya fill the senses. Citrus heaven melds with pistachio hazelnut nougat. Bulrushes dipped in caramel arrive in a coach of maple syrup and honey. The caboose arrives with rum and raisin ice cream, dried apples and vanilla bean explosions.

Taste:  Honey and smoke wrapped in soothing spice. Dark fruit emerges. A field of tobacco leaves wafts its splendor. Dark plums and apricots collide in a delectable hybrid. Australian black licorice erupts on the palate. A chorus of peat notes play out of the shadows.

Finish: A long finish is fuelled by the dark fruit and baked apple compote. The licorice-anise threads continue to sprout flavor tentacles. There is a “thickness” of flavors that soothes and satisfies.

Comments: The JW XR21 flaunts a maturity and balance that is both alluring and appealing from nose to finish. One can detect some really aged single malts in this expression. The nose is quite dramatic in its intensity, the palate a true indication of its maturity and the finish, a testament to its consistency and impact.

Score: 94.5
