I am relatively new to collecting whiskey, and for personal reasons am only collecting Glenfiddich. So far I have mainly purchased retail, but I've had a few bargains on ebay too, for example I got a Centenary bottle for £175.

I have been researching the past auction catalogues that I can see online. They make very interesting reading.

Another of the 1961 bottles I am after sold at Bonhams June 2009 auction for £984. Also found several bottles of the 40 year old, they all seem to sell for around £1000. One of which is currently on sale with a retalier for £2000.

Has anyone bid online at these auctions, did it work okay?

At Mctears the buyer pays the hammer price together with a premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus VAT . As long as you keep this in mind while bidding you can still get some good bargains.

Yes, but its still likely to be a lot less than you would need to pay for the same item at a retailer if they buy at aution.
