A friend has decided to sell most of his whisky stock (about 250 bottles out of 300) as he is moving abroad and will need the money also now we are out of the EU he is worried if he will get hit with tax's..

He has asked me how I would sell it to get the best rate, but I have never sold anything and have only brought 2 or 3 bottles at auction so I have no idea.

What would you recommend?

Things have changed due to Covid and Brexit regards whisky auctions here in the UK, how much it has effected the prices bottles are fetching still remains to be seen but i would say the specialist whisky auctions would be the way to go with such a big collection.

He may find this info on Scotch Whisky Auctions useful:

Scotch Whisky Auctions has been the best of the bunch for me in terms of selling. Whisky Shop Auctions can work for some bottles but not others; it's still establishing itself. Whisky Auctioneer is also a reliable seller but charges commission. Something you'd definitely notice on a 250 bottle sale!

A number of online retailers and auctions will also buy complete collections or negotiate commissions.

I often decide where I'm selling based on individual bottles... not all whisky is equally collectable/desirable and can perform differently in different places.

Whiskybase market is also an option. They charge an 8% on bottle price, if I recall correctly.

I agree with webdunk that the right selling place might be different depending on the bottle(s) - and obviously the value of the collection.

I'd also imagine that if you posted some bottles in the "Whisky for sale" section of this forum you'd get some traction.

I have told him about Scotch Whisky Auctions and he is looking into there T&C's.

When I was talking to him he showed me his WhiskyBase account and it is way way north of £60k but that is there pricing not the real price at auction. As for selling on here I know he doesn't have an account on here but given how he likes the hassle free life I don't think him selling and shipping bottles one by one would work for him?

I could be wrong, I will ask him when I see him.

Worth noting they arrange collection for free though, which if shifting a 250 bottle collection might prove cheaper than paying to send to a non-commission charging house.

That is a very good point we did not think of. I am guessing he would drive them to where ever he chooses as I do not think he would trust a parcel company ( I wouldn't ) as that is a lot of whisky!

SWA and Whisky Shop also both offering free collection. (As would anyone I suspect for 250 bottles)
