This was last of H2H for Caol Ila OB,
Tasted in this order
1 - 12 year 43% OB old Oval label, red lettering Zenith Import, Bulloch Lade 88 points
2 - 1983 30 year 55.1% OB 82 points, scored much higher by others, samples was weak and spoiled by the looks of it hence 82 points
3 - 15 year 57% Zenith Import Bulloch Lade 57% 0B - 91 points
4 - 1968/1982 full proof 57% Duthies for Samaroli Oval label
As tastings go this was not a great one, tried the Zenith Import before and similar score this time the 12 year 43% was a bit weak, the 30 year OB was compromised (shame)
Tasting notes for the Samaroli
Nose
92
The nose is a little subdued, but the overall effect is lovely, a creamy fresh type of peat with faint hints of spearmint (possibly) anyway?
As you nose this you get a sense of the depth of profile
Very good
Taste
93
The peat grows and grows in your mouth, and it has a dirty oily edge to it, but not much fruit coming through.
Ever so slightly cardboardy and bitter which surprises me.
There is lemon, a little lime, a little ginger and a few other spices to boot.
With a few drops of water the nose has definately opened up with more fruit on show and some waffle notes with syrup.
Finish
93
Creamy finish, with the pepper and peat rejuvenated by a few drops of water and more fruit is released
This is a very nice caol ila but I was expecting it to be better but a pleasure to try all the same. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
