Does anyone have any info on the so-called Fiona Macleod 33 year-old Islay single malt? It's available on the Master of Malt at the moment.
The bottler is The Character of Islay Whisky Company (I hadn't heard of them before), and the strength (46.3% ABV) makes me think of Bunnahabhain. |

Alex, interesting whisky and name. Fiona Macleod Scottish (writer and poet) was the pseudonym sometimes used by William Sharp ( born 1855). Folks didn't know that they were the same person. William was born in Paisley and lived for a time in the Highlands of Scotland, Australia, London and died in Sicily. I don't see any association whatsoever with Islay. He belonged to the Isis Urania Temple of the famous Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn magical society (the occult). No idea if he was a drinker or teetotaler. Whisky advertising at its best... As to where the whisky derives from, I have no idea and none given in it's promotion.

| Thanks Murray. Master of Malt did an online tasting of this earlier tonight - I hadn't realised it's from the same bottler as the Aerolite Lyndsay (which sounds like a suitcase) that I already knew of. Without mentioning any names, I asked if the strength was a clue as to the distillery, and the reply was cryptic - apparently it's a nod to an old Italian bottling of this distillery, so it may not be as simple as Bunnahabhain as I was suspecting. He was similarly teasing about the 48% strength of the 25 year-old Islay single malt called Grace Ile. |

I looked further into it Alex particularly when you mentioned old Italian bottling. Laphroaig did do some of these older Italian bottlings such as Laphroaig 10yo 'Unblended' (43%, OB, Cinzano Italy, Bottled +/- 1985). Interesting.... _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

The Fiona Macleod has now been outed by more than one prominent reviewer as a particularly, shall we say 'perfumy', Bowmore! Maybe a bit naughty from Master of Malt not to mention those tasting notes (like TWE did in a similar bottling).
I can confirm though that the 25 year-old Islay (the Grace Ile) is excellent, and I'm almost convinced it's a Caol Ila. |
