I know it's a bit of a price rant and I could call on a number of bottles but I have tried to purchase most Signatory Clynelish that become available .
Only within the last 9-12 months have been paying from £145 for a 23 Y.O 1995 and I think £165ish for The Whisky Exchange 20th Anniversary but yesterday was excited to see a 1995 24 Y.O. on Master of Malt until I looked at the price........ £275 and guess what it sold out.
Before it sold out I had already decided not to purchase especially when for that price I have purchased a Signatory 22 Y.O Glentauchers, a TWE Ledaig 13 Y.O and Clynelish 14 for the same price.
I know it's me as it sold out but what is happening to prices around a 75% increase in a year (for 1 extra year in age).
For that reason I'm out. |

I am in the same boat as you, as are many others.
If you are looking for value over & above supermarket malts you avenues for finding older whisky at a fair price are decreasing rapidly.
Look at Balblair 25 year £500, Glenmorangie vintages at £600 for a 23 year and independents wanting at least £250-£300 for some 25 years it is sad to see but it seems distillers and bottlers have decided that anything with a half decent age statement is going to cost you.
There is still value to be had but rarely in the UK, I look towards Holland & Germany for value purchases these days on anything over 20 years old.
Luckily for younger stuff at the moment in the UK there are some decent special offers on the go. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

Is it any wonder with people pissing their pants over a £40 5 year Ardbeg? Madness.
In a way I blame Springbank, who through no fault of their own haven't changed their pricing model in a long time. I'm sure the bigger distilleries wondered why they too weren't charging 400 notes for a 25 year and got all excited about the prospect. |

| One of the very reasons I checked out of the Scotch market, on the whole, about 5 years ago. Still buy and drink the odd bottle but its not been my main tipple for some years. This isn't a new thing. |
