Glenfarclas has just released their oldest whisky to date, Glenfarclas Pagoda Ruby Reserve 62 Year Old which was distilled in 1954 and bottled in 2017 although they are only now releasing the whisky for sale as the next instalment in the Pagoda Series. It is a limited edition release which is rather uniquely presented in a Glencairn decanter featuring hand-mounted precious rubies.

A way out of my league but I would love to see the decanter up close to see the workmanship that has gone into it, I wonder what the rich folks who buy these do with the empty bottle once they have drunk the whisky.

I doubt whether any of these will be opened, only a few max.
A little too blingy for my tastes but I would love to know what the whisky inside is like?

Rob I doubt that we will see one of these empties on ebay Laughing

I would love to taste it to see how good it is, but that's unlikely to happen though.

I'm the kind of person that would buy this just to admire the beauty of the whole package.

Something that is an anathema to most true whisky fans I know but I love the craftsmanship and effort that's gone into them, and the pride too.

I'm sure that some people will see it as obscene and greedy to release things like this but I've been to Glenfarclas and chatted about their history with them I feel like it's perfectly justifiable to reap the rewards of the drive and effort of all the generations of the family that have worked there.

Now, all I need is a lottery win so that I can buy 2 of each Very Happy

I would like to think if you have the spare cash to buy such a bottle you would be opening it and enjoying it.

Yes it would, totally agree, unfortunately for bottles like these that is very seldom the case, people who buy these are often top end collectors but more often than that investors, bottles like these are not designed to be opened now they are widley seen as investment vehicles.

A word of caution for anyone thinking of buying this with a view to tasting it.

The marketing says:-
While the whisky is certainly extremely old, the real star of the show here seems to be the decanter. Made from the “highest quality hand blown, 30% lead crystal” by Glencairn Crystal,

I can't take the credit for finding this out, some other whisky lover did the home work on another forumbut worth posting on here

This may have health risks, this from another source:-

Leaded crystal wineglasses and decanters are generally not considered to pose a significant health risk, provided that these items are washed thoroughly before use, that beverages are not stored in these containers for more than a few hours.
Items made of lead glass may leach lead into the food and beverages contained.
In a study performed at North Carolina State University some brandy stored in lead crystal for over five years had lead levels around 20,000 µg/L.
An ordinary diet contains about 70 µg of lead per day.
It has been proposed that the historic association of gout with the upper classes in Europe and America was, in part, caused by their extensive use of lead crystal decanters to store fortified wines and whisky.

Don`t say I didn't warn you? Shocked

It wont be long before these types of bottles are sold with the enclosures sealed/glued shut.

"Excuse me sir, you want to do what? Open the bottle? But why?"

"....er, so I can drink the whisky"

"Oh no sir. It's not one of 'those' whiskies, it's not for drinking - one simply looks at the bottle from a distance"
