I have just seen that Douglas Laing has brought out there next instalment of the Black Series which is a 40 year old Port Ellen from 1979 but it has a price tag of £3500

I have a couple of the early XOP Black Series as I was talking to them and they where only planning on bringing out a couple a year of there finest whisky's. But now I am defiantly thinking that they are starting to pitch there prices to the collectors and bringing them out a lot more frequent...

Would you say £3500 for a 40 Year old Port Ellen is too much?

Well, a £3500 bottle of Whisky isn't a drinking whisky, unless you're incredibly rich. So it's not aimed at Joe Bloggs.

Is £3500 too much for a 40yo Port Ellen? If we assume that it's aimed at investors then no. It's an indie bottling, it may be utter rubbish, but that doesn't matter. The target, price and package for this means it's going to be a trophy for someone and then probably sold on to some other rich mug.

Even if I were very rich I don't think I could ever bring myself to spendkng 3.5k on a single bottle of anything, unless it was water or eternal life or something..... Laughing

It's crazy money for an indie Port Ellen. There are many, many more Port Ellens available for way less and not that much younger.

Totally agree, if it was a reasonable price it might come into the range of serious drinkers and that would run the risk of drinkers giving an honest assessment of the contents.
Bottles like this do not get opened, their contents remain a mystery, all you have to go on is trade tasting notes?

Good old Douglas Laing prices. The push on maximizing profits over last few years is clear to see. Even the DL website has sold bottles with mark ups on the original sale price a few months later. They just make up the price and if people want to pay it they are laughing.

There pricing has put me off their bottles recently. Keep reinventing the 'exclusive' range. Platinum then Black, and Private Stock... what's the team naming their next special bottles. I'd invest in something else with that kind of cash spare.
