I got myself a bottle of Clan Denny Islay malt and have been sampling it tonight. I picked it up in the airport shop, it is the first time i have seen it but it intrigued me enough to buy it it.

It is a NAS vatted malt containing Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila and Laphroaig and it is bottled by Hunter Hamilton Company, Glasgow.

I have to say i am very impressed with it, very impressed. It is a dry quite heavily peated smoky malt. Anyway what i am posting about is - who is Hunter Hamilton, it is a new one on me can anyone shine any light on this one for me. Forgot to say it comes in a 750ml bottle so maybe it was not intended to be available in the UK market.

I believe that the Hunter Hamilton Company was founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1949. Jim Murrays whisky bible rates very highly and gives it 94 points, the bible also names Douglas Laing as the bottler.

Not sure why it it is 750ml bottles perhaps it was intended for overseas and some found its way into the airport duty free shops in the UK.

I wonder how it compares to the new "Big Peat" from DL. Where did you buy it Lewis?

I enjoyed the Big Peat but it was not as peaty as the name may imply, nice dram though. I havent had the pleasure of the Clan Denny so couldnt compare them although the Big Peat does have some Port Ellen in it.

Cheers everyone for the responses.

McKay, i got it at Prestwick airport duty free shop for £24.99 Alastair, it deserves the 94 points Jim Murray gives it, well worth the money i paid for it. I wouldnt mind trying it next to the Big Peat now.

Anyway, if you like the smoky islay malts and come across this, i can say it is worth a try.
