Do we have many members with their own cask? What experiences can you share about your cask, or has anyone any strong feelings or thoughts of buying a cask.
I had the chance in 2000, but didnt make the step. I am now considering making a step into the journey of cask ownership but welcome any thoughts. |

| I have considered it in the past as an investment, I am not sure of the pricing now and if it would be a good move for a private buyer, it very much depends what you will plan to do with the cask. |

I didn't buy for investment, I bought it to support a new distillery (borders). As far as casks from established distilleries, investment sharks have jumped in so be very careful - use a well established broker not some fly by nights advertising on facebook - or do what I did and support a new distillery (not the Islay one though - casks are insanely prime)
Best

| To expand a little on my reply, when I said investment, my thinking in the past was to sell off a number of bottles to cover some of what my costs would have been and to avoid having too many bottles for myself to drink. In the end that is what put me off having too many of a unpredictable quality whisky. |

I own a Swedish cask, from high coast destilley ( http://boxwhisky.se/en/ )
A suprisingly god whisky... as the water in the nearby river stays the same temerature all year they have no issues with cooling.
this means, im told they can mature the whisky all year and gets to the wanted ageing faster.
Dont think it will be an investment, but its a fun journy to follow your cask.
Find a few friends and buy one togheter! |

I've been mulling the idea over at Lindores Abbey, much selection and different offering of barrels to accomodate different prices.
Choice from
Firkin Ex R Wine Charred
Ex R Wine Charred
Sherry Firkin
Ex Bourbon Firkin
Sherry
Bourbon Quarter Cask
Refill Quarter Cask
Peated Refill Quarter Cask
Old Forrester ASB
Peated Refill ASB
STR (Wine Barrique)
Bourbon Hogshead
Refill Sherry Hogshead
2nd Refill Sherry Hogshead
Refill Whisky Butt
Refill Whisky Puncheon
Oloroso Sherry Butt
Port Pipe
Unfortunately I'll struggle to get friends to join me as my social circle are non whisky drinkers so unlikely to fork out hundreds of pounds. Ive visited and talked through the team at the distillery and thinking of a refill quarter cask on the basis it will be better aged around 10-12 years then split the contents 3 ways for different finishes.. while not having excessive volumes.
This is not seeking investment or profit, just supporting a local distillery and to have a good feel factor for a decade knowing I own my own cask..
More info here, anyone wanting to join me, give me a shout and share the journey
