|
|
Hello all, traditionally been a wine drinker but I was given a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 year and when it was nearly empty I spent a long time reading about different single malts but in the end I played it safe and bought exactly the same again because I enjoyed it so much but I'm looking to try something new this time.
I like to drink Glenmorangie after a rich meal with a little ice or water. I'm not keen on the idea of huge peaty, smoky, antiseptic tastes, i'm interested in a little sherry coming through but not overtaking and dominating. I want something rich and thick/oily, smooth, with a medium/long finish but not bitter aftertaste. Not too much tropical fruit or oak either. I like vanilla, biscuit, orange flavours among others.
in the £30-40 range I'm considering Bunnahabhain 12, Balvenie Double Wood 12, Clynelish 14, and possibly GlenDronach 12 but i'm worried there's too much sherry and not enough malt coming through with that one.
If any of you could give your opinions on these selections and/or suggest suitable bottles from your own experiences of moving to a different Highlands dram it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

| I would suggest that you may enjoy Dalwhinnie Winters Gold, Glen Grant 10, Glenfiddich 15, Balblair 2005, Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Glenfarclas 12 which has a little more pronounced sherry but not at all heavily sherried |

| thanks for your replies and ideas. From what i've read about Balvenie and Dalwhinnie I'm a bit concerned about them being too sweet bordering on having a sickly finish however. would anyone recommend Glengoyne 12year old as being worth a try? also I should have mentioned that I have an Amazon discount voucher that needs to be used by midnight on 25th Jan (UK time) so if there are any great deals currently that suit the profile I have given that you know of, please share them as soon as possible! |

| Given the oily type of whisky mouthfeel that you describe I’d suggest a Craigellachie 13 which ticks a lot of your boxes. If you don’t like a sickly taste steer clear of the double wood for sure. Use the voucher wisely and go for a decent dram that you can’t pick up in the supermarket. |

Yep, Glengoyne 12 definitely worth a try, similar profile to Glenmorangie 10.
Also Balblair 2005 as recommended above - Balblair is one of my favourite distilleries, and it's a close neighbour of Glenmorangie as well (just a few miles down the road!).
EDIT: I never found the Balvenie Doublewood sickly sweet personally. The Glengoyne and Balblair are closer to the Glenmorangie in terms of flavour profile though. |

When I first got into whisky, glenmorangie 10 was one of my first go tos. Following a tasting I found myself enjoying the edradour 10 just as much.
But as said earlier in this post, balblair is a great shout and my favourite |

| thanks again for all your input. I investigated every bottle mentioned, some were too expensive, one was unavailable, the Glenrothes and Balblair were extremely tempting but in the end I got a bottle of Glenlivet 15 year old on Amazon for £25 with my vouchers so I'm hoping it's a good one. Happy Burns Night everyone! |

| Glenlivit 15 I found a little bit disappointed! But I hope you enjoy it as it’s not a bad dram. |
