Hi Everyone, long time no post!
It's a not insignificant birthday approaching and my other half has offered to go to Islay for a few days in October. We'll be staying in Port Askaig but unfortunately the visit will coincide with Caol Ila's annual shut-down, although their visitor centre will still be open.
As much as I'd love to I can't visit every distillery as I'll be relying on being chauffeured around, so for my birthday I was thinking about:
- Laphroiag's Distiller's Wares (10am, 2 hours)
- Lunch at the Ardbeg cafe
- Ardbeg's Ardbig Tour and Tasting (2pm, 2 hours)
- Bunnahabhain's end of the day tour (5pm, 1 hour)
I'd try and fit in a quick visit to the Lagavulin and Caol Ila visitor centres to get my passport stamped (if they still do it), but does all that that sound feasible in one day?
Also I'll speak to the distilleries but my other half really doesn't get on with whisky, so although she wants to come with me will be there as an observer rather than a taster (plus she's driving ). Will we have to pay full price for the two main tours or would they charge her a lesser price for just walking around and not sampling the wares? |

If you take the tour you pay the full price, regardless of how little you care about whisky Besides, distilleries know there are always plenty of drivers who can't drink anything, so they normally provide sample bottles to take home. But - you can take advantage of that and have your other half's samples for yourself later!
I haven't been to Islay myself so can't comment on any particular tours (I've only been to Glengoyne, Deanston, Balblair and Tomatin), but this guy has visited most Islay distilleries so it's worth checking out his reports for ideas: https://myannoyingopinions.com/category/distillery-visits/ |
