Hi all, first time poster here. I am more of a bourbon collector, but the liquor manager that I buy alot of my bourbon said they had a contact of someone with some rare scotch for sale recently. I met up with him and he is an older gentleman that had these two and a couple of other bottles. They are 1972/1998 Macallan 25th anniversary malt, and 1969/1998 Glenlivet vintage. He said he is a contractor and a friend that he did some work for with a multi-million dollar house gave him these bottles in echange for some work. I did a bunch if research and comparison to bottles sold at legit auction houses, and they look pretty good to me. They do not have the boxes with them. Can any experts here let me know what their opinions are of the bottles, if they have seen these particular ones faked before, and what a good price to pay for them would be. I think I have an idea from auction results. They are the US export versions and are both 750’s. Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!!

P.S. I’m trying to figure out how to post pics, anyone have an easy way on a phone?

When the boxes are missing it is always difficult to predict how much this will effect the selling price. I am sure you have looked at recent auctions of the Macallan 25 Anniversary 1972 and will know that in good condition with the box it is fetching in excess of £3000 at auction, the missing box may stop it fetching near this price at auction but you may get lucky and get close to the £3000.

You may possibly be looking at around £600 for the Glenlivet 1969 but again it is difficult to predict without a box.

Bottles like these are prime targets for fakers so I can understand you wanting to verify there authenticity, are you in the UK, there are a few whisky auctions around such as Mctears, Bonhams or the online scotchwhiskyauctions.com who would happily take a look at them for you if you approached them with a view to selling them

Thanks for the info so far. I am in the US, but maybe some of the shops and auction houses might give me an opinion if I ask. Hopefully the pics come through:

They do look in very good condition to me, I would suggest looking for an auction in your area if you wish to sell, or you could ship them to an auction in the UK where most of the big specialist whisky auctions appear to be located.

Can anyone else offer opinions? Are there any other forums that are popular where I might be able to ask the same for additional opinions? Thanks!

I'd recommend what's been said so far, maybe try contacting one of the auction houses here and see if they can help or offer an opinion. I've had good service with both scotch whisky auctions in Glasgow and whiskyauctioneer in Perth, both are in Scotland.

Cheers

It is clear from looking around the various whisky auction websites what these bottles fetch when in good condition and boxed but as mentioned it is difficult to predict what buyers are willing to pay when the box is missing. Macallan is the most highly sought after of the 2 bottles and a genuine bottle even with a missing box could fetch close to the price it would fetch if it had a box. The Glenlivet should do well also without the box. No-one has a crystal ball here, auction prices for bottles with missing boxes can vary dramatically, just depends on the bidders on the day.

Watching auctions lately Macallan without the box still seems to hit the same price as those with the box.

If you follow ebay people actually sell the boxes!
