I’ve just welcomed my first son in to the world and I thought it might be a great idea to buy a fine bottle of malt now for us to both enjoy when he turns 18 (although I’m not naive enough to think it’ll be his first drink, I’m hoping it’ll be his first try of whisky).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking something that had been aged for 18 years. The closest distillery to our house is Linkwood, but an 18 year old Linkwood just doesn’t seem quite fancy enough. I’m also not massive fan of Macallan or the prices they would charge so I wouldn’t be considering them either.
Happy to listen to any ideas!

Congratulations. I’m doing the exact same as I’ve also just welcomed a son into the world born on the 30th at 11:18am.

Have you got any distillery nearby that you can hand fill a bottle and you can put that away? Or how about one if the new distillery’s that seem to be popping up. A Daftmill bottling, other releases may be released this year and then grab an 18 year daftmill in 18 years time and taste the two side by side.

Good luck

Congrats to yourself too Rob, my wee boy popped out at 13:57 on the 30th!
I like both those ideas. Glendronach isn’t too far away and I think they can do personalised bottles that you can also fill yourself.

I’ve emailed GlenDronach so I’ll let you know if they respond.

I’ve also asked a couple of distilleries if they have bottled anything on the date, if they come back I’ll let you know. Might see releases bottled 30/8/18 around Xmas if we’re lucky depending on how quick it can get to shops.

Enjoy.

Congratulations gents, I would suggest that you keep a close eye on the releases over the next few months, you never know you may get lucky with a bottling from the exact date.

I wonder if you called distilleries that sell direct online and also offer bottle your own at the distillery would they be good enough to fill a bottle for you and post it out to you, you never know you may get lucky if you spoke nicely to them.

Congratulations to you all..
Some distilleries might have bottled a few bottles in advance.. Places like Auchentoshan and Glen Moray sometimes bottle the odd bottle from the Bottle your own series so might have a bottle or two left if you ring them..
Whatever you decide to do, the fact you have bought something on the day your children were born will make it special whatever the bottle..

Thanks all.

I can think of, other than the above, Bruichladdich and GlenDronach have a fill your own.

Does anyone know of any others?

Cheers

Rob

Congrats to both of you. Don't Glengoyne offer bottle your own, although I couldn't tell you what they have on the go at the moment and I am sure they would be happy to bottle something for you and post it.

Congratulations - I think the bottle your own is a great idea. Currently, I can confirm that Glengoyne, Deanston, Balblair and Tomatin all offer it (among others of course, but these are ones I have bottled recently). Tomatin have a range of five casks - if you want something special you can bottle their oldest one, which was a 27 year-old bourbon cask when I was there.

Edit: Actually since you're based in Elgin the closest distillery that does a bottle your own is probably Glen Moray.

Congrats on the new additions to the collection gents.

As Alexppp points out Glen Moray also has a bottle your own, it may have changed but a couple of months ago it was a 10 year old matured in American bourbon for around 6-7 years then a few more years in a sherry cask and they also have (or at least they did have) a superb Glen Moray 1994 Sherry Finish Distillery Edition which was if I recall correctly, 16 years in bourbon and the rest in sherry.

Thanks to all!
Glen Moray isn’t too far away from me right enough, but I’ve found some of their offerings to be a bit unspectacular. However I’m happy to have a look at anything else they may have that might be that bit special. I’ll give them a visit and let you know how I get on!

Congratulations Acksboy and r900p.

Glen Moray offered a trio of 1994 Distillery Editions, I only tried one, the 1994 Bourbon Cask which was excellent, and by the accounts I have read the 1994 Sherry Finish was very good also, you would be lucky if they have any left, they were priced at £125 if my memory serves me right. If you are interested or to enquire what the Glen Moray bottle your own is now you can call them on 01343 550 900.

Have been past Glen Moray twice in the past week to ask about bottling my own. Unfortunately they’ve run out of labels and don’t seem to know when they’ll be getting them in again. They didn’t seem too bothered about it so maybe they don’t have much call for bottling their own nowadays. Bit of a disappointment, but I’ll try them again at the end of the week and if I’ve still no joy then I might give Glendronach a try instead.

There are distillery exclusives at aberlour that look rather good. Reasonable prices also.
