I personally would rate the Aberlour 12 slightly above the Aberfeldy 12 but there is not much between them in quality IMO. The Aberlour has a bigger sherry influence so if you are unsure whether he would like a sherried whisky then give him the Aberfeldy.

Aberlour12 for me, better all round taste, the aberfeldy is more punchy but my taste buds love aberlour.

If he is a whisky drinker I am sure he would appreciate any one of the two bottles, personally I would choose Aberlour.

Both are good, just different, it depends on your personal taste, like others I would prefer the more sherried sweeter Aberlour 12 but I would not say no to a free bottle of Aberfeldy 12.
