Highland Park The Dark 17 Year Old was released at the end of last year, the first of a pair of new limited releases from the Orkney distillery.

The Dark is a release of 28,000 bottles which have been matured in sherry seasoned European oak casks and bottled at 52.9% ABV.

I am a huge HP fan and this does sound good but a bit too rich for me. I have registered my interest for a bottle if the Highland Park YESNABY at £75 a bottle, fingers crossed I get lucky in the ballot.

I had spotted the HP The Dark in the shops, I hadn't heard anything about it, they must have sneaked this release out, it does sound good from your note William and I noticed that a bottle just sold at auction for £260 https://www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/auctions/120_the-82nd-auction/196122_highland-park-17-year-old-the-dark/

Why on earth would anybody pay £260 for a bottle of this at auction with 10% +VAT on top when it retails for £190 and there are 28000 bottles of the stuff so its not like it is going to run out any time soon?
Are people mad, what is going on here, please explain this one to me because most retailers ship worldwide now.

How on earth is a 28000 bottle run classed as limited edition anyway???????

You have to assume it was a Highland Park fanatic overseas who lives in a marketplace where it isn't available. Some seller got very lucky whatever the reason is for someone to pay more than what you can readily buy it for from whisky shops.

I believe that limited defines that is a finite number as opposed to "not very many"

Yeah, I know ,my point is with 28000 available it is not really limited and not going to sell out any time soon, basically the term in this particular instance is pretty pointless IMHO.

It depends how you look at it, 28000 bottles in the UK isn't very limited but this is 28000 bottles spread worldwide which will probably be pretty limited in most countries. And thumbs up to Highland Park for revealing the numbers bottled it is the bottles which get released and state they are limited but do not state the numbers which annoys me.

I think limited isn't defined by magnitude really just by the fact there's an end number. Perhaps they have only have enough source casks to make this many?

I think where I've seen limited edition fall down in recent times is on A Midwinters Night Dram by Glenmorangie - they stated that it was limited - didn't say to how many - just for Christmas and then proceeded to do it again the following Christmas.

William it is a cracking expression of Highland Park, as you said the finish could have been a little longer and I would have liked a touch more smoke but I am just nit picking, I am pleased I got a bottle. Just going to pour another, cheers.
