I was lucky enough to get my hands on a bottle of this (subsequently auctioned) and wondered if anyone here could add to the information I have / story around this bottling..?

It's a limited edition, cask strength whisky from Glenmorangie. Distilled 10 May 1993 and bottled 7 September 2005 at 55.7% in 75cl bottles for the North American market. Part of a limited run of 247 bottles filled from cask 1946.

It was part of a series of experiments with different types of oak including :

Burr Oak (1152)
Missouri Oak (877)
Truffle Oak (886)
Post Oak (296)

Interestingly, there's about to be a tasting of the full series at the whisky show in London.

What seems to set this bottling apart aside from it being the lowest outturn of the set is that a lot of them were lost in transit (posisbly to JFK airport?) to their retail market back in 2005. This means it is incredibly hard to find out much about them (it only appeared on Whiskybase yesterday).

After a decent period, some of the lost drams appear to have been found and have been returned to sender at Glenmorangie in Tain and these recently started to be available from the distillery. After Monday's auction closing, the distillery did a roaring trade and sold its remaining 50 or so bottles in one day!

Glenmorangie are good at losing whisky for a few years then finding them again, I recall a few years ago many of the SMW forum members got a bottle of Glenmorangie 1992 Cask No.1285 which was bottled to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the partnership between bacardi-martini and Glenmorangie Apparently it had been forgotten about and had sat in their store for around 8 years. It was a outstanding cask strength single cask first fill bourbon whisky. I dug out the old post http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1333
