Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum. I enjoy reading a lot of threads here about reviews, news and discussions about so many different whisky. And seems to me that lot of you guys are pretty knowledgeable about whisky.
So , anyone could help me out here ?
Recently, I met someone who wants to sell this bottle of Macallan 25. I got some pictures of it, I got 1 pretty decent picture but the others are kinda blurry. 1 thing that confused me is the capsule of the bottle. I looked up on google, almost all the Macallan 25 bottle with the ribbon, they have a purplish capsule. There are some other bottles with golden/brownish capsule but they dont have the ribbon on it.
But this particular bottle that I found, it has the ribbon but with golden/brownish capsule.
On the picture, the capsule looks pretty okay. It has the duty stamp and the hologram on it.
And this make me pretty confused.
What do you think about this guys ? thanks.. Smile

You need to provide more information for anyone to help you.

Which Macallan 25 are you on about the 25 year sherry from 2011 onwards, it sounds like the 25 sherry and ones with the ribbon as far as I am aware always had the purple capsule?
Perhaps it was an issue in the bottling plant, it can happen.

Are you able to upload the picture here for us to look at?

Did you take the pictures yourself, just checking?

Do you know the seller, do you trust them?

Does it feel right to you, my guess is that it does not or you would not be asking the questions.

When buying any purchase that is expensive if something does not feel right then trust your instincts and walk away, if a bottle seems really cheap there is usually an underlying reason for this, real bargains are very hard to find.

Capsules can be replaced, it is quite easy on some older Macallans, tax seals can be faked, labels can be faked, if you cannot visually inspect it in person, you will never be sure until it gets posted to you.

Hi Lincoln,

Thanks for the reply..! Smile I dnt think I can upload the picture here.. too bad..but I did check the picture myself.. It is a Macallan 25 sherry . I dont really know the seller, so I'm not sure if I really trust him or not..
Yeah you're right, I dont feel really comfortable about it, so I guess I'll just pass for now..
Thanks for the insight...it really helpful..

Btw, I read it in other forum, that Macallan put a code at the back of the front label of the bottle..Do you know if all of the Macallan bottles have this ? or is this something they just started doing to protect against the forgery ?

cheers ! Smile

I have to be honest not sure 100% but it makes sense as Macallan were highlighted as one of the main target for fakes and I know they were looking at possibilities to help reduce the problem.

I don't think that the purpose of the number is to protect against forgery, I think it is more a lot number, for the likes of traceability for quality control but if the number is missing I would give the whisky a miss. Many fake whiskies come in genuine bottles with genuine labels and corks it is often the seal on the cork which is a give away.

Lincoln has given some very good advice, everyone loves a bargain but sometimes they are too good to be true.

All good information! If you haven't already checked, whisky base is often useful.
