Hello,

I am new to the forum and sorry if this post is not appropriate (read the rules).

I want some recommendations for smokey whiskies to give as a present to my gf's dad which is new to the whisky scene. He tried the usual Glenmorange and he liked them but he had some Octomore 5.1 and he fell in love with it. So i am looking for recommendations for whiskies (up to 50 pounds) which he might like.
I had in mind either Laphroaig which is a personal favourite (20 pounds now on amazon for black friday), Lagavulin or Ardbeg. Any other recommendations? and which would be closer to Octomore (i know this is hard)

Thank you,
Andreas

You could get a Port Charlotte - either the Port Charlotte Scottish Barley or the PC Islay Barley would fit the bill. They're from the same distillery as Octomore (Octomore and Port Charlotte are both peated versions of Bruichladdich whisky).

I will 2nd the Port Charlotte suggestion and Amazon currently have the Port Charlotte Scottish Barley on offer for £37.90 which is a great price for this, I got a bottle myself and you get free postage from Amazon which is usually pretty fast you will find it here http://amzn.to/2jS2xQu

I would echo the 2 previous posters on the Port Charlotte. Lovely dram.

If you can stretch a bit and the Octomore was genuinely a big hit then here's a wildcard for you - 5yr Heavily Peated English Whisky - it's a phenomenal dram.

Another callout for Port Charlotte here.

Alternatively I'd suggest anything Ardbeg or Laphroaig.

I think ardbeg 10 would be a good option around £40 if you want to spend a bit more ardbeg ugieadail or port Charlotte 10.

Thanks everyone for your replies, his wife bought Port Charlotte for him so i need something else. I will go for Ardbeg An Oa since i've seen a lot of good reviews. Thanks again.

Not tried the an oa but it sounds nice. I see you're from Newcastle. I'm from Durham. Welcome to the forum.

I would agree with the suggestions of Port Charlotte! Alternatively Caol Ila or Talisker might be good

I dont know if i should put it here but is there a post about all the Black friday deals? A lot of whiskey sites will reveal them soon it would be nice to have all the offers in one post. The offer i mentioned earlier on amazon (Laphroaig 10 year old for 20 pounds) is not on anymore

Laphroaig 10 for £20 is a steal.

Too bad the offer is not on anymore Sad I dont know why, maybe they sold out. They do have some other great deals though especially from Bruichladdich. Octomore 6.1 is 85 pounds, never seen it under 100.

That is a powerful beast at 67.4%, I wonder what strength they fill to cask

Anything from Ledaig ( Sherry cask ) is a stunner. Also cheap option ‘Peat - Cask Strength ‘ from TWE outstanding
