My father left me a very nice bottle of whisky a few years back. I've been havering since then between drinking it or selling it. I do like a glass or two but my interest ends there. I did some basic research and I think it is worth a 4 figure sum. What would be the best way to go about selling it? Dealer? Auction? Private? I hesitate to say Ebay?

My choice if selling would be one of the specialist whisky auctions. There are a number of specialist whisky auction such as scotchwhiskyauction.com and mctears.co.uk

I suspect that eBay is a no-go even if you do want to try it. My understanding is that they don't allow alcohol sales by anyone without a licence to sell it, and they insist on checking that you have such a licence before allowing sales. I've heard that listings by unlicensed sellers get taken down.

Thanks for the Ebay info. Strike that option from the list.

It's a Macallan Anniversary 25.

In that case, probably best selling it at auction. There are half a dozen or so around the UK offering different rates so would depend on your location and preferences.

Assuming you're in the UK, Here's a few to look at:

Aberdeenshire - whisky hammer (good guys, good service, might even collect for free? I've bought off them and have been great)

Glasgow - Scotch whisky auctions (0% commission at the moment but super slow to do anything)

Glasgow - McTears (classic auction house)

Perthshire - Whiskyauctioneer (pretty good service)

Fife - Justwhisky (have bought off these guys and are decent)

London - whisky.auction (convenient if down south, a little more expensive than the rest - I think I paid 15% commission + VAT)

The there are lots of smaller ones like Edinburgh whisky auctions, etc etc. Have a look at a couple of sites. Hope that helps.
