I think this might be my first forum post so forgive me if this is in the wrong place.
I was in my local ASDA this week and noticed a whisky I didn't recognise named 'Tasgall'. No sign of it in my copy of the Whisky Bible, and the only thing I can find online is that ASDA registered the name 'Tasgall' in March of this year as a product name (hence too new for the Bible). I was wondering if anyone had read anything more about it, or has even been tempted to buy and try? Sadly I didn't pick a bottle up to study it but the 25yo is £50 and the 30yo is £60. It might prove to be a collector's item if it doesn't take off and ASDA withdraw it. |

I had never heard of this brand. However, after doing a bit of probing I came across this info:
"United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office Publishes Application for Trademark "TASGALL" to Asda Stores for Various Goods
Posted On: May 3, 2014
Government News UK Government News Newswire
South Wales, May 3 -- Asda Stores Ltd., Leeds, has filed the trademark "TASGALL" on March 28, for various goods. The trademark application (journal number: 2014/018) was published on May 2. Class(es): 33 [Alcoholic beverages (except beers); whiskey] ".
This suggests that this is their own brand and there is no indication what exactly is in it.
Is it a blend or single malt? What is on the bottle description. Do you recall? Is it a Highland expression? _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Hi ziggsteruk and welcome to the SMW Forum.
Coincidentally I spotted the Tasgall 25 & 30 year old yesterday evening in Asda. Other than the info on the tube it is the first I have come across it, should be interesting to try.
You are correct Murray, it is bottled under Asda's own brand label.
The name Tasgall is Scottish but I believe has its origins in Celtic/Norse mythology, meaning "cauldron of the gods", perhaps a clue to its origin in its name, who knows?
Aldi supermarket released Glen Orrin 30 year old blend a couple of years ago which was an outstanding blend and was very highly rated in Jim Murrays Whisky Bible but I wouldn't say that has become collectable amongst whisky drinkers which surprised me as it is an outstanding blend and a brilliant price, it was £50 but they are currently selling it off for £39.99, I picked up a couple of bottles the other day. _________________ There's no bad whisky. Thanks for the replies! Now you mention the Nordic connection, Tasgall does remind me of playing Valhalla on my ZX Spectrum in the 1980s. Although I don't supposed that was the image ASDA were hoping to conjure up.
The presentation of the Tasgall certainly looks nice but it's a blend, at a minimum of £50, so I wont be the only one waiting to read reliable reviews before considering a purchase. With the Old Pulteney 17yo and Ardbeg Uigeadail still on my shopping list, the Tasgall will have to be outstanding before I consider it.
That's interesting about the Glen Orrin 30yo. I doubt my local Aldi will have it but I'll try and drop passed and have a look. Cheers! |

| I really rate the Glen Orrin 30 and if you can pick it up for £39.99 it is a real steal, I swept up a few bottles in various auction sites for around £30 a bottle a few months ago (with commission and postage worked out around £40 a bottle). |

So has anyone purchased a bottle of this mysterious 25/30 Tasgall yet?
I may purchase a bottle IF it goes on sale before Christmas, or maybe if it doesn't go on sale, I will report back in a couple of months! |

I said the same thing to my wife, with a price point of £50 & £60 I think at some point it will get reduced (although a great price for a 25 & 30 year old, it is way above anything else in my local Asda), maybe after Christmas |

| I suspect that this price point is the end of the line for this particular whisky, suspect that it probably hasn't been selling that well. |

I can't imagine them having much luck at full price again after being this cheap for at least a couple of weeks. Surely everyone would just hold out waiting/hoping for a repeat reduction?
A total guess of course, but I'd have to agree with arqueturus that such a steep sale price smacks of end of line to me too. _________________ The Drawing Room // Crimson Glow Photography |

| Just been to my local Asda after having read this post. Got the last two bottles of the 30yo at £25 each. They had quite a few of the 25yo still. Any reviews of this around? |

From what I can gather the 25 year and 30 year score very similar so the 25 got the nod as the one to get on quality/price ratio.
The 30 year had been deleted from sales according to Asda staff.
The 25 for £20 is a steal. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

I'd been buying too many whiskies from Amazon when this deal was on, so I had to hide my two bottles at the office and still haven't snuck them home! _________________ The Drawing Room // Crimson Glow Photography |
