Hello all.
Posting here for info about an unopened bottle of Encore whiskey. Came out of the Leith Distillery and still has seal and label in mint condition. We found it when clearing a deceased relatives house. Any info or valuation estimates appreciated. Can provide photos.

The Leith Distillery was also known as Bonnington’s distillery, it was founded by Mr Balenie and Mr Kemp in 1798 and then purchased by John Haig in 1804. Leith Distillery/Bonnington’s became a major grain distillery, and one of the first companies to use a Coffey still in 1835. Distilling at the Leith Distillery closed in 1853. The site however was extended and its warehouses are still in existence today under the Diageo’s Bonnington Road bonded warehouses. Today the Haig name is now probably best known from the Haig Club brand, a Scotch single grain whisky promoted by David Beckham around the world.
Encore Whisky was labelled as being manufactured by Bernard & Co. Leith Distillery, it has been around since at least 1876 (going by old advertisements I have seen) and was still around during the World War I when it was advertised as “A Toast To The Brave†and it was apparently matured in sherry casks.
Pictures of the bottle would be of great interest. _________________ There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky. |

| Stig, I cant make it out in the picture, could you type out what it says exactly on the bottom label (Ministry of Food) as it may give a clue to aging the bottle. I does look in good condition with a good fill level. |

Through a bit of jiggery pokery I believe it says:
Particulars furnished in compliance with the Spirits (Prices and Description) Order 1920. Strength ... 30 degrees [something something]. Maximum Price 12/6 per bottle |

Yes it does look like it says 1920, if so you could assume it was bottled around then or there abouts. It looks in extremely good condition for a bottle of that age, rarely do you see whiskies this old and in this condition. I think a chat with some of the specialist whisky auctions is the best way to go, they can all be contacted online.
I would suggest Mctears in Glasgow and Bonhams in Edinburgh who both host specialist whisky auctions.
Do let us know how it all turns out.
Cheers |

| You may have something very special there stig. Something which basically never comes to auction so it is very difficult to put a price on. As suggested above contact Mctears and Bonhams to see what they say. I hope it brings you a packet as clearly whoever had it all these years has looked after it. Do let us know what happens. |

I believe the Ministry of Food was separated from the Ministry of Agriculture during 1916–1921 the same happened during world war 2.
I have never seen the strength written like that before.
A very rare find I would say. |
