|
|
| I've been looking to expand my limited collection and have decided to go down the discontinued route. So far I've acquired a Scapa 16 and Laphroaig 18, however my discovery of these being discontinued came from sheer luck and hear say from other whisky chums. At the moment I'm just checking every whisky site I can find. Does anyone know of a source which gives updates on bottlings which are being discontinued? |

I don't think there IS one definitive source for whiskies being discontinued. From personal experience I'd say the best thing is to keep an eye on whisky forums such as this, or active Facebook pages, and continue growing your list of whisky chums and contacts. I found out about the Scapa 16yo and Longmorn 16yo purely by chance via an email from my local whisky shop. If you have a local whisky shop then you could always ask the owner for a heads-up if his suppliers say a bottle is being phased out.
Just as an aside, it could be argued that every bottle will be discontinued eventually. Even if the title and age remain sometimes the packaging changes, and certainly the casks used are forever changing. You might also want to keep an eye on what is considered the best whisky now because once that vanishes, or changes packaging, it will be consider a classic of the past. The list of options can be reduced further by having a price range and/or preferring age-statements over NAS. It was having a set of rules like this that caused me to get the likes of the Glenlivet Nadurra 16yo and Glendronach 15yo before they were discontinued. Both classics of their time. |

Thanks for the advice. I've been doing what you've recommended but I wasn't sure if I was perhaps missing something - nice to know a more experienced hand is doing the same!
As well as discontinued bottlings I'm keeping an eye out for limited editions and new releases. Just today I bought this:-
https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/34959/kilchoman-2006-10-year-old-TWE-exclusive
A worthy purchase for £150? I might drink it or possibly keep it as an investment to sell on in years to come (sacrilege for some I know), as there were only 240 bottles produced. |

| That bottle is a tricky one. Was a private cask (hence no TWE markings on bottle) and was sold to TWE at a high price. As kilchoman is coming of around 10 years old there will be a lot of bottles at this sort of age in the next year or two. For me, not an investment. However, as a kilchoman fan I think it will be absolutely delicious. Thought about it myself but potentially have a few coming off someone else's cask soon so holding on! |

Macallan Ruby is discontinued along with Glendronach 15 for the next few years at least.
I managed to get a bottle of the Glendronach 15 bottled in 2015 so that makes it 20 years old. _________________ If Jack Bauer was gay, his name would be Chuck Norris |

Aberlour 10 year old is going NAS but it wouldn't be a valuable bottle, but one to buy up now if you enjoy it. |

| I managed to get my hands on the Scapa 16 also. Would love to have a Laphroaig 18... Such a shame it has gone! |

| What price should I be paying for Laphroaig 18? Interested in it as I want to drink it, not save it, but the prices seem all over the place now it's discontinued... |
