I have just read this article in the Daily Mail about Scotland's distilleries are running out of malt whisky because of a surge in sales from the USA & China. In the article they show a picture of a bottle of 1964 Black Bowmore & they say that a bottle would cost £500. Where the hell did they find a bottle of 1964 Black Bowmore for £500? The Whisky Exchange is selling 1964 Black Bowmore from £7000 - £12000.

It’s simple - don’t read Daily Mail (or watch Fox “News”). They are detached from reality… Wink

After this news I would not be surprised if the distilleries try releasing NAS ( no age statement) obviously no one knows what this stands for as it is new news to everyone... 😬

In the last few weeks there are many articles in the mayor newspapers about whisky shortage (most written from the same perspective: buy, buy, buy).
Lazy journalist are using old data and information feeded by SWA...

Not sure if that was sarcastic or not......

....having you been buying surplus bottles since 1982?

I've read a lot of the same articles. I take a different slant on the issue. My dad was born at the turn of the 20th century and he always told me that if you want the best of anything in any tangible object, by definition there will inevitably be less of those objects at some point of that quality & rarity and they will become more expensive whether it is coins, baseball cards and now whisky. The rarer whiskies traditionally have been the older ones and now certain age statements though younger ones have followed the same path but mostly because of limited production as for example Bowmore the Devil's Casks 10 Year Batch 1.
I don't think there are any surprises here, it's just the nature of the game.

The National: Don't believe the hype - the world is not running out of single malt whisky.

I like the quote about older malt:
“Why is this news? It’s like saying you are running out of Rembrandts or Ferraris â€" there are only a limited amount of these bottles produced in any one year, and distilleries can’t go back and start them again.”
