Hi everyone. New user here and an absolute beginner as far as whisky is concerned. To be honest I do not know much at all. I am not an alcohol drinker in fact because of my sensitive stomach so as you may guess it was not really by choice.

Recently I came across what I considered to be an investment opportunity. I had the opportunity to buy a Single Malt 1978 rare collection bottle of Glenfiddich. The cardboard box was factory sealed and inside is a wooden box with the bottle and of course its certificate. Now here is where it gets complicated.....

I bought bottle number 154 out of a total of 180. Bottle and certificate agree but the bottle was mistakenly boxed in box number 155 from the factory. So somewhere out there is bottle number 155 with a box numbered 154!!!! Now mind you we are talking about a 3000 GBP bottle of whisky here (roughly given the market prices). And the mistake is entirely from the factory.

The question is what do I do given that I am storing the bottle for investment purposes? Do I demand that the right box be sent to me or stick to the wrong box with more than adequate proof that it was entirely the factory mistake? It is known that factory mistakes are extremely rare increasing the value of the item. I am open to suggestions!

Get hold of the correct box or it will look more than a little off when you go to sell it as it is in years to come. If they cannot provide the correct box ask for a refund as you have no plans to drink it.

I agree if it is from a reputable seller request the correct box or your money back.

It is from an airport duty free shop so it is as reputable as it gets.

Totally agree if it is bought as an investment.

If you get no joy from the seller contact Glenfiddich directly.

I'm not sure why you think the problem was at the factory? Ocams's razor, the retailer took them out of the boxes and put them back in the wrong ones. Phone them and ask them to check then go back and swap ....

Funny you should mention this as I recently watched a vlog on YouTube with some one who has had the same.. It could actually be the person you need as his was Glenfiddich and box was one number away from the bottle.. I will try to find it again and let you know..

Well I am fairly certain because as soon as the plane landed with the bottles they were carried through customs in their cardboard boxes and I was waiting for mine as soon as it came out of customs. The retailer never handled the box or bottle. I paid at the counter right at the customs, and received my factory sealed cardboard box. It was only when I opened it that I saw the mistake.

To be honest, I complained to the airport duty free store and they asked that I take the bottle and box in so that they take a picture and request the right box from the manufacturer.
