Good morning ! (or at least from Tennessee, USA):

I enjoy good scotches, and my sister, knowing this, gave me a bottle of Glenfarclas 25 that her late husband had obtained many years ago. It's unopened, metal cap intact, and in the old dumpy square bottle. Distilled and bottled by J & G Grant, imported by Capital Importers, Chicago, IL.

I'm just wondering if I should open it. If it's valuable, I could try to sell it and replace it with several bottles of good (but not 25 yr old) scotch. Or I could just enjoy it on a cold winter's night (It's snowing now), neat with just a splash of good water.

What would the readers do?

Hi Jim, I believe the Glenfarclas 25 year old square bottles date back to the 1970's. They sell for around £200 - £260 at auction depending on condition and whether they have a box. You will have auction costs to come off this amount, usually around 20%. You will find the Glenfarclas 25 from the 1970's selling in specialist whisky shops for £450 - £500 but you will never achieve that at auction or in a private sale.

If it is in good condition you should be able to sell it and buy yourself 2 bottles of the current Glenfarclas 25 which is excellent, just depends on the bidders on the day at auction.

Cheers

Thanks for the information. No box, just an old looking bottle. Both cap and label are in excellent condition.

How would someone in Tennessee USA go about selling a bottle like this? Is there an online USA site for auctioning whiskies?

Jim

I would not sell it but drink it in honour of your late brother in law.
