Ardbeg goes stellar with Supernova

Ardbeg has unveiled the limited-edition Ardbeg Supernova, described by the Scotch whisky brand as its peatiest expression ever.

Supernova is a single malt Scotch whisky with a peating level well in excess of 100 parts per million. This level of peating it makes it 40% more peaty than the distillery's best-selling 10yo expression, said the distillery.

The limited-edition expression is bottled at high strength (58.9%abv) and is non-chill filtered to allow the peaty character of the whisky to develop.

"What is in the bottle delivers an experience very close to drawing whisky straight from a cask in the warehouses on Islay,"? said the company.

Ardbeg Distillery Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden explained: "For the creation of Ardbeg Supernova, we analysed and tasted a wide range of stock from our maturing stock profile, including some very old stock, and some younger stock. We were looking for something that would deliver an incredibly peaty, smoky flavour, but, most importantly, would also deliver the breathtaking balance and complexity for which Ardbeg is renowned.

"With Ardbeg Supernova we can offer the malt whisky drinker both an unparalleled depth of chewy peat smoke, and a range of other delicious flavours, such as sweet malty tones and delicate citrus,"? he added.

Ardbeg Brand Director Hamish Torrie noted: "With Ardbeg Supernova you have nothing less than a galactic explosion of flavours, with salt and pepper, roasted coffee, chilli, chocolate and hand-rolling tobacco all contributing. It is sure to be very sought after by whisky connoisseurs yet would also make, with its bold and premium packaging, an ideal and unusual gift for those curious to discover more about the wonder of Ardbeg and Islay whiskies."?

Ardbeg Supernova will be available from 15 April in limited quantities, retailing at £79.99.
