during the holiday season, travel retail gifting spend reaches over $1bn on spirits alone. Of this, Whisky occupies the top spot with 44% of travellers selecting it as their gift of choice
I had read in the past that over 40% of malt whisky sales happen this time of year. William your article demonstrates how much of these sales will be gift buyers, which perhaps explains why much of the travel retail shelves are now filled with no age statement whiskies marked as travel retail exclusive implying some sort of rarity or uniqueness to the gift buyer.

It is a shame that a lot of the distilleries are releasing so many NAS drams now. Although some are fantastic a lot of them are not worth the price you pay. I have a Bowmore Black Rock (travel retail exclusive) which simply isn't worth what I paid. It has some interesting flavors and is in a 1L bottle however.
