Old Pulteney 1989

Old Pulteney have announced the release of a second vintage limited edition lightly peated whisky, this time they have released Old Pulteney 1989 which is around 26 years old by my calculations. What makes this a lightly peated expression is not the peat level of the distilled whisky but the casks the whisky has matured in.



Matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, which previously held heavily peated malt. Natural in colour, non chill-filtered, 46% ABV the Old Pulteney 1989 will be released to the UK this month with global markets to follow. The new whisky has an RRP £135 per bottle.

William I see Jim Murray rated the 1990 bottling you mentioned at 85/100 perhaps why it hasn't sold out. He didn't say anything bad about it but did use the word "dull" in his comments. As you say the new Old Pulteney 1989 is a different whisky, different distillation, age and type of cask although they still previously held peaty whisky. and as Mr C points out it is sensibly priced. I will await some reviews.

Makes me realise how barmey things have gone over the last couple of years when we start talking about a 26 year old at £135 as "sensible pricing" - it probably is, in today's market, but it makes me have a long and sad sigh.
