Hi

I am just sitting here this evening enjoying a few Talisker 18 year olds which i consider to be one of my favourite malts. The other 2 which i consider my favourite is Ardbeg 10 and my favourite sherried malt is Aberlour a'bundh.

Although i like to try a a variety of malts these are the 3 whiskies i probably drink most of and always have at home and therefore would say are 3 of my favourites.

I am probably looking for ideas for what to buy myself next so i thought asking others what their 3 favourites are would maybe give me some ideas of what to buy next.

So what are you 3 favourite whiskies.

Keith

Hi Kieth

I will join you in saying the Talisker 18 although it is difficult to get a hold of these days. Highland Park 18 and 25 year old are both favorites although i havent had the 25 as much as i would like to. My 3rd would be Ardbeg 10, 17 when i am treatimg myself.

I have many more favorites, lol Very Happy this is just a few.

When i fancy a sherried malt i go for Balvenie Doublewood. For a hit of peat Lagavulin is my favourite. The Talisker 18 is also a favourite. Like Samson, i have a lot more favourites, lol.

3 slightly more expensive drams that are favourites of mine are Lagavulin 21, Highland Park 25 and Ardbeg 17

3 everyday drams which are favourites of mine are lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10 and Highland Park 18

Having said that there are so many malts i enjoy just depends on my mood at the time whether i fancy a smoky Isly malt or a sweet Speyside malt. My list of good drams is endless.

Ardbeg Airigh nam Beist is awesome.
Inchgower in the Flora and Fauna range is good if you like a salty malt.
Lagavulin too is superb.

Agree re. Aberlour A' Bunadh - fantastic and good value for what you get.

I also like the Aberlour A' Bunadh for my sherry fix. Anything i have had from Lagavulin has been excellent. Had an excellent Port Ellen 1976 26 year old bottling from Douglas Laing which i thought was excellent (in fact i have had a few different Port Ellens from DL and all where very good).

I agree Iain, the Ardbeg Airigh nam Beist is awesome and welcome to the forum.

I once heard the perfect response for this question.

The whisky im currently drinking!

That being said all of the above whiskys are good choices, along the islay idea, i recently tried and loved Adelphi Bunnhanbain 9year.

i found this a touch better than Ardbeg. It is much peatyer than traditional bunnahabain.

an example of price - ardbeg (10) AU$90 - abovementioned whisky AU$125.

Vcdman, we would pay between £23 - £28 for a bottle of Ardbeg 10 which is I think around 50AU$ - 60AU$ so that is some difference in price to what we pay in the UK. Out of interest why is the price so high down your way, is the acohol tax really high in Aus? Or is a bit of profiteering going on.

Alastair, i agree the Port Ellen 1976 from DL is a great whisky.

im not sure, i dont think it is the tax because some liquor is reasonably priced.

here is a link for a thread to whisky prices around the world

Thanks for the responses, i just hoped the thread would throw up a few ideas for me for something i may not have tried. I have been lucky enough to have had the Ardbeg 17 which a couple of you mentioned and it is a great whisky. I like the Highland Park 18 but not had the pleasure of the 25 yet. I may be tempted at trying a Port Ellen bottling from Douglas Lanig as it seems to have impressed a couple of yous. Any more suggestions of good whiskies such as this are very welcome as i am always interested in something different.

Keith,
your question: what are you 3 favourite whiskies. (not what age, barrel et.)

ARDBEG ARDBEG ARDBEG Top Malt
It does not matter what age, strength, bottling, finishing, as long it's producing at the Greatest Distillery in the Universe (Supernova) !!

Don't get me wrong Keith, I've drunk a lot of whiskies since 1975 and I only started on malts in the late '09's, but after drinking Ardbeg, I knew that that was it.

Living in the whisky capital of the world, I have the opportunity to sample most drams and new whiskies from around Scotland (not to much interested in others). Also for the last 4 years our little charity company Dufftown 2000 Ltd. organises Nosing & Tastings every summer for 13 - 14 weeks in which distilleries / distillers bring their goods to us. This is very popular with tourists mostly from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, German and the rest of the world.

Having been to Islay and Ardbeg 5 times in 8 years (another visit planned in May 09), and having 20 odd Ardbegs at home (always 5 open at one time) not including my own bottlings of Port Finishing Ardbegs, I am very much hooked on one of the greatest drams of the Universe !!

Hi Rene

I noticed you mentioned your own bottlings of Port Finished Ardbegs, i have often considered trying something like this myself. If you dont mind could i pick your brains about how you go about creating your own whisky. What i would like to know is:

What size of barrel do you use and where do you get the barrel?

I would assume you add some port or sherry or whatever your preference is to the barrel and let it cure for a while but for how long?

Then how long would you keep your whisky in the barrel before the barrel would have and influence on the whisky?

What is the whisky loss to the angels in a small barrel?

Any other tips or info would be great.

Thanks

Charlie
