|
|
For a couple years now I've been building up a fairly modest collection of scotch single malts. Understand that when I say "collection" that I'm talking about bottles which I'm primarily buying for the purposes of collecting, possibly selling in the future but unlikely drinking.
Safe to say my collection is a bit all over the place in terms of it's purpose but I've recently came across the idea of trying to buy a bottle from every single malt distillery in Scotland. Does this sound ridiculous and is this something that many collectors have done?
Due to finances I would have to accept minis from many of the closed distilleries as I can't fork out anywhere near £500+ a bottle! I've been checking several whisky auctions online and it does appear that this would be financially viable with even the most collectable minis rarely costing over £100.
I would also be interested to hear if any fellow malt heads have experience of this kind of collecting. Cheers all!
P.S. Surprisingly it seems as though Ben Wyvis minis would be the most expensive to fork out on if the online auctions are to be believed! I also expected the Port Ellen and Brora minis to be a lot more expensive but seemingly not (certainly not complaining!) |

some mini bottles depending on the label and rarity will fetch over £100.00 depends on the label to mini bottle collectors that is there a different breed to full bottle collectors
collecting from every distillery depends where you go back to date wise will depend on what you can get
best of luck |

Acksboy, that would be quite an undertaking but if you have the time and money to acquire them, it could happen and be unique. I would say there are approximately a grand total of 141 single malt distilleries including those past (silent or demolished) and present in Sotland with a few more with firm plans on the table. I don't know anyone myself that has acomplished this feat of collecting one from every distillery. Good luck! _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Time I have, money less so! I'd envision this would be something I'd do over a long period of time so hopefully it'd be possible.
This is the guide I've been using:
http://www.scotchwhisky.net/distilleries/
I'm not so bothered about the grain distilleries and I realise there may be a few missing closed distilleries, especially those that went silent before 1980s. If anyone can list anymore then I'm always willing to add them to the list. |

| This is a big undertaking as mentioned and if it is indeed to be used to sell on it will have to be fairly complete.. This is also an ongoing thing as distilleries are popping up all over the place.. And the more collectible bottles are those from closed distilleries, if you decide to go ahead then I wish you good luck ... for me I went for a certain year ( both daughters birth year ) these bottles are easier to get hold off but as the years have passed and the bottles become older they obviously go up in price ( both buying and sale prices) but it's great fun to see them lined up.. |

| A worthy collection idea sorren! I may yet change my mind on doing this. Thinking again about minis, it may just be easier to try and collect them where possible to save on funds. |

Fear not, research has begun
My wife's late grandfather had quite the collection of miniatures and I'm gutted my whisky interest predates his passing as I'd have loved to ask him about collecting. My father-in-law has said I can have the collection when her grandmother passes but I'm not sure how comfortable I am with this. Feels a bit like whisky gravedigging! |

| Daunting lists. Then there's all the active distilleries. |

| There are a lot of people collecting single malts from all active distilleries (about 112 + some new build). Maybe you can start with this plan and eventually add bottles from recently closed ones. |
