I'm in the early stages of putting together a tasting for a group of lager and vodka drinkers (at their request) and was hoping to introduce them to the wide world of whiskies.

My thoughts for inclusion so far are:

Jack Daniels
Jamesons
Grants or Grouse blended
Ardbeg 10
Auchentoshan 12
Macallan 12 or Abelour 12

I need to keep the costs down so no older or exotics will be possible.

What do people think? Have I got a good balance of different styles? Have I missed anything that is a "must" for inclusion? Question [/list]

Maybe an Islander too, Talisker 10 or HP 12 if you have either. Both good entry level age statement whiskies.

I generally wouldn't include American in a lineup, it's too sweet to put anywhere but last as it'll ruin your palate for the others. Problem is with JD is it will just seem way too harsh after those others so either way it's going to put a spanner in the works.....just me though.

If it were me and I was looking at costs I would remove the Auchentoshan 12 and replace it with Auchentoshan Classic.

That will give you cash to upgrade your grants or grouse to something like HP12

Definitely the Jack Daniels has no place on that list. I'd also bin the grouse/grants for a bottle of monkey shoulder to show modern blends that are coming out these days. And upgrade your Jamesons to the select small batch version.

Very new to single malts myself but I would recommend Balvenie doublewood, laphroaig 10 or for value at the minute Glenlivet 12 is pretty good !

You have one American Whiskey, one Irish, and 4 Scotch whiskies in the lineup. That appears to be a nice introduction.
