So been drinking decent Scotch for over a decade now, but only been going round the Bourbons for a few years. I've had some really good ones, but this one has really stood out to me...so just thought I'd share a bit.
Ridgemont Reserve 1792 Straight Bourbon
Age: Minimum 8 years
Vatting: Small batch
Strength: 46.85%
Rye, custard, rye, stewed pie fruits (apples, pears?), rye, pastry, rye, coffee, rye, butterscotch/carmel, rye. Lots of vanilla, lots of rye.
It's really good, and really mellow/smooth. There is no "burn" that you often get with bourbon, but still busy, complex and interesting.
So, as it's a straight bourbon it's all natural colour. Pretty good as it's dark, dark, dark.
One of this things that I think makes this whisky is the ageing, you can tell that's it's pretty agressive aging, the flavour is immense. Apparently it's aged in warehouse Z on the Barton estate, and apparently this warehouse is located in "probably" the best position in all of that there Kentucky for aging. Of all the barrels in this warehouse the ones chosen for this small batch are located at the top (ie the ones that get hammered the most of the change of seaons and aged the hardest).
You can really tell that, whatever they say, the barrels chosen for this small batch were cracking barrels...and I mean really, really good barrels. I'd love to have one of these as a single cask
....anyway, dunno how the price in real money translates to the American spanglies but it's £50 over here, which may seem like a lot for a bourbon, but it aint. If you treat is like a "whisky" (and yes bunch it in with Scotch, Japanese, Indian) then quality for price it is outstanding.
This will now be a regular in my cabinet (when it's in stock and I can get my hands on it). _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |
