The Old Malt Cask

Hi

I have a bottle of The Old Malt Cask. Its from the St. Magdalene Distillery. Distilled in September 1982. Its a 28 Year Old. Bottle 1 of 249.

Anyone have any idea what it might be worth?

Oh very nice. The distillery closed in 1983 (bad year for quite a few now legendary distilleries).

I'd think you are looking at around £300-£400 for the bottle, obviously prices very depending on demand but there always seems interest in St Magdalene. What I've tried have been younger than this but it's generally a good whisky.

I would say top end you would expect to get £250 for this at auction or in a private sale bottom end i would say £160, just depends on the bidders on the day.

Lennox estimate will be close to the mark but opelfruits estimate is way way out IMO. Personally i would say you would be lucky to pick up much more than £150 for this and you would then have auction costs to take off.

I would say Keiths estimate of around £150 will be spot on, perhaps a little more but this will never fetch anywhere near opelfruits estimate of £300-£400

Incidentally, I've just had a look on various retailers (who also purchase from private sellers) and these are topping out at £400, so guess I wasn't a million miles away

"Worth" - it's worth whatever anyone is prepared to pay for it. Personally £150 is low for this and if it were me I'd either drink it at that cost or not accept anything less that £250-£300. You can speak to TheWhiskyExchange or Hard to Find Whisky (htfw.com) and see if they would be interested - given their current stock I'd say they would. Get them to make you an offer - it'll be more than those low aution prices.


To put this in perspective;

you can buy 28 year old whiskies from current and operating distilleries for way more than £150 at the moment (Highland Park, Longmorn, Singleton, Benrinnes). Magdalene is closed, it's iconic and it's a collectors item so by default it is worth more than current and operating offerings from others.


....ultimately, it's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Hell, for £150 I'd have it off you without a second thought.

opelfruit the prices you will see in whisky shops who also purchase from private sellers are usually around double what the whisky will achieve at auction or in a private sale. Shops like The Whisky Exchange do purchase from private sellers but at auction prices and often less, they do not pay the prices you see in the shops. I would say you ARE a million miles away with you valuation. TWE will offer a fair going rate for any whisky and if that whisky normally goes for £150 at auction i would guess TWE would perhaps offer around £120 - £130 for the whisky, which is around the amount the seller would walk away from an auction with, they will not offer more than the current going rate auction price that is not going to happen.

pcornet you could stick it in the back of a cupboard for 5 to 10 years i am sure it will accumulate some value in that time but for now i would agree with others who say you would get around £150 for it.
