| What are the Forum thoughts on the 'replacement' for the 1401. Collectable? Seems very expensive to me for a very unlimited ed. |

| I have saw it but havent heard much about it. Some good review will no doubt make it collectable. |

I think the whole point is that they are trying to make it non-collectable. Supply far exceeds demand for the 1401, the 1509 is 4x the capacity with the sole purpose of balancing the supply to demand issue.
I'm sure some people will collect it, and no doubt batch #1 will carry the most potential for investment (as they always do), and I'm sure prices will be high, but hopefully they'll get it right and stop the ridiculous secondary market inflation by producing enough juice to cope.
What made 1401 so good was the small batch approach, once you start quadrupling the size of the batches it's going to reduce the quality (not that it's bad spirit but getting so many exceptional casks per batch is going to be simply harder, so they'll have to chuck some "not so exceptional" ones in there to mix it out and make up the numbers). _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

| I doubt the point in replacing the Balvenie 1401 with the 1509 is to try make it non-collectable but simply to make more money as the Balvenie will know demand will be there for a larger release and like any limited release no matter what the numbers it will always become collectable if it picks up good reviews. |

I tasted the newly released replacement for the Balvenie Tun 1401, The Balvenie Tun 1509.
I thought the new Tun 1509 batch 1 has a lovely balance and is a more than worthy replacement of the for the Tun 1401.
More info on the Balvenie Tun 1509 and my tasting note here:

| Thanks for the note William, surprisingly with such a popular release there doesnt seem to be any reviews of the new Tun 1509. I have a bottle unopened and was debating whether to buy a 2nd bottle, i have now asked my wife to pick up a bottle from the airport for me this weekend, it seems to be the only place where you can still get a bottle as the whisky shops have sold out. |

Bit pricey even at rrp if you ask me. I paid £200 for the last batch of tun 1401 and this is supposed to yield 4 times as much as 1401, yet the price is higher.....don't get it.
1401 was pricey as too much demand, this is supposed to specifically try to combat that demand issue ergo prices should be lower......I guess not.
Loosing interest in Balvenie now, especially given the price of the 15yo single barrel sherry. Think I'm going to stick to my Balblairs, Glencadams and Benriachs - where you get excellent value for money. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

My feeling on Balvenie is that William Grant and Sons are trying to position Balvenie as their more 'Premium' brand. I do really like Balvenie certainly more than Glenfiddich, but these are large money making machines and for me they are flirting with losing some of the magic that I've always thought Whisky (particularly Balvenie) had over other spirits/distilleries.
But if there are 10 wannabe customers for every bottle you produce of Tun 1401/1509 what incentive is there for them to lower prices. |

I agree with a lot of the points above, although I still remain faithful to the 12 Doublewood, 14 Caribbean Cask and 12 Single Barrel, as well as the 15 year-old Glenfiddichs (both the Solera and the Distillery Edition). |
