Friends of mine are going to California from Canada and on return are planning to stop at Duty free. I will ask if they can bring me back one bottle. Here's some choices. What would you suggest?

Highland Park 1990

Glenfiddich 19 1 litre

The Glenrothes 3 Decades

Johnnie Walker XR 21

The Glenrothes 1991 1 litre

The Glenrothes Robur Reserve 1 litre

Firstly is the Glenfiddich 19 the age of discovery bottle ? If so which one and is it 1l ? I got mine from duty free and is only 70cl .. Otherwise I would poss buy glenrothes 3 decades, I also got the balvenie triple wood which was pretty nice, but not sure if that's available where you are..

I haven't tried any of these (though I I've enjoyed other Glenrothes from the early 90s), but I would be most tempted by the Highland Park.

That's the trouble with duty free, you can't bring enough back, I'm sure whatever one you decide on it will be good, the fiddich could be interesting if it's a new expression, I havnt had much in the johnny stable so can't comment on it, I think I'd still stick with the Rothes ..

If you like Laphroaig then the Laphroaig PX Cask is excellent if you can get hold of it.

The HP 1990 (if the same as the one in Europe discontinued about a year ago for the travel retail NAS range) is very very good - I'm not an HP regular but that one is special.

The Highland Park 1990 is excellent and being a vintage release, once it is gone it is gone and you wont get another chance to get a bottle as HP seem to have replaced the HP duty free vintage bottlings with a NAS range named after vikings.

Murray some travel retail exclusives i have tried and enjoyed are Macallan Estate Reserve, Bowmore 100 Degrees Proof which sadly is discontinued but you may still find it in some duty free shops, Laphroaig PX Cask, Talisker Dark Storm. All 3 of the Glenfiddich Age of Discovery 19 year old bottlings are very good and worth trying, there is a travel retail exclusive gift pack which contains 3 X 20cl bottlings, 1 each of the the 3 Age of Discovery bottlings.

Highland Park 1978, 1990 and 1994 were all excellent and you are lucky to still be able to get the 1990.

The Macallan Oscuro and Bowmore 23 year old 1989 Port Cask Matured are excellent but unfortunately not in a everyday dramming price range.

I havent had any of the Dalmore Constellation but if you want to get a couple of bottles i would love to hear what you think of it.

I have never tried the Johnnie Walker XR 21, it is supposed to contain whisky from Brora.

I have had all 3 of the Glenfiddich Age of Discovery and liked them very much, in fact i have a bottle of each open at the moment.
